I've interpreted this announcement as him changing his voter registration in WV to Independent. So just like Kyrsten Sinema of the Sinema Party, who didn't want to lose her committee assignments, it's really just a post-November thing that means nothing in the short term.
Neither of them will get credentialed at the DNC--they can take a joint vacation trip down the Intercoastal Waterway--and if they have any outstanding campaign debt they can't cover, the DNC/DSCC can tell them to pound sand.
I assume Assholemanchin gets booted from his Committee Assignments:

Granted, Manchin doesn't really NEED a reason for this beyond his bloated ego, but he probably still has one. My guess is that this is the first step in his strategy to run for the White House in 2028 as a third party, No Labels-type candidate. Assuming we're still having real elections at all in 2028, that year will be the best shot possible for a middle--of-the-road third party to win, with both parties having moved beyond their current dominant figures and no clear heirs apparent.
He's smart enough to get reelected in West Virginia as a Democrat during the Trump era. He knows politics well enough to figure out what a 2028 race is likely to look like.
