May I put in a word for Pollyanna? She was not the rose=colored-glasses type who always thought everything was wonderful. On the contrary, she always knew exactly how bad things were. But her way of coping was to find something, even of it was very small, that wasn't awful - that she could be glad about, and used that knowledge to calm herself enough to deal with the awfulness rationally. It's not a bad way to live. (I assume the people who continually mischaracterize her have never read the book - any of the books, although it's the first which explains the technique most clearly.)
