Missing something…why force asylum seekers to wait 6 months before getting a work permit? To “prove” they are really seeking asylum, and not just here to steal jobs as home care workers or custodians or vegetable pickers from all those ‘Murricans who would otherwise be doing them? Instead you FORCE them to accept 6 months of socialism, when my money says the vast majority would be glad to get a job as soon as they get off the bus.

Is it maybe because performative outrage is the BEST kind of outrage, and an immigrant being forced to accept rent and food and a bus pass is clearly a TAKER?!?

So is this behind those YT ads I see where a WOC tells us 'fo' real' the federal govt is handing every immigrant across the border $5,000? Hey, where's MY $5k, you're supposed to ask! I never watch long enough to be sure its Americans for Prosperity propaganda (Koch family) but it fits their mold.

Gotta say, I'm kinda in love with that one determined kitten in the basket who is NOT DISTRACTED by the colorful balloons overhead and is focused on ESCAPE.

There's always one of those in every litter, isn't there?

So all we ever hear about immigration these days is asylum cases, and illegal, i.e. literal border hopping with no visa or asylum claim. But aren't there immigrant visas? Like, just people who say "I want to live in the US pretty please". How many of those people are there and/or how restrictive is that? (or the way my Greek and Swedish grandfathers came, which was "get off a boat and stay" which was perfectly legal when they did that in the early 20th).

Also too, Denver--unlike Texas--will now have a pool of labor applicants eager to take summer (and longer term) jobs.

Chase away immigrants and you lose the most motivated work force in the country.

"We imagine there are also some rightwing jerks complaining that Denver is simply doing the bidding of George Soros and advancing the Great Replacement of white people"

Oh, hell yeah. But hey, as a general rule, the value of a government program is directly proportional to the volume of wingnut squealing, so let 'em goddamn squeal.

RIP: "Morgan Spurlock, ‘Super Size Me’ filmmaker, dies at 53" [https://www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2024/05/24/morgan-spurlock-supersize-documentary-dies/]

Hadn't thought of him in many years but his film ‘Super Size Me’ was very well done. He had a TV series after that which I caught a few episodes of. He apparently died from cancer complications. So young.

For those of you who don't also frequent Balloon Juice, front pager there Betty Cracker has been diagnosed with cancer, and the prognosis is 2 years, tops. Here's hoping this absolute snarkmeister can beat it. The BJ community raised over $50,000 this week to help her and her husband out with her fabulous tour of expensive medical facilities in the Tampa Bay area.

After two weeks of Donnie's trial, and all the insipid bullshit it creates, I think we all can use a little holiday.

"Sounds like socialism to us, and that’s pretty awesome. Especially since it’s less expensive and more practical than just shoving people into shelters for a short time and then hoping they do OK after that."

The oligarchs don't want efficiency. They want untrammeled license to exploit us for trillions, then to protect these trillions from being reclaimed by the peoples' government for the peoples' benefit. The reason that republicans have been trying (and partially succeeding) to destroy government since the New Deal is that we have not yet let go of the selfish conceit that we have the right to make our government work for us, and to use it to protect ourselves from them.

Exactly! The right has been very successful in setting the popular vocabulary to their ends.

Protections from the ravages of unfettered capitalism are called "regulations" etc etc.
