Ta, Cakes We Like. Speaking of, beloved fiancé Meccalopolis and I chose three vegan cakes from a great Brooklyn bakery to serve at our wedding. Since we're not having a traditional wedding cake (I can't say I've ever had a good one), we got a wee vintage bride and groom cake topper to put on the cake table.

Off Topic: Someone posted a compilation of presidential campaign songs. I had to track down Nixon's. It is a *banger*. I challenge anyone to not start bopping along.

I challenge not to laugh at Nixon trying to be Kennedyesque by strolling along the beach-- in a business suit complete with black leather shoes.

Mrs. Hero also suggests Craisins, but her favorite is semi-sweet with white chocolate and bits of Maraschino cherry.

Spoke to my 95 yr old neighbor today. She’s going blind due to glaucoma. Her niece was supposed be bringing her food but has stopped and now the neighbor feels like she was taken because she signed everything over to her.

My husband and I have been making her meals and we cook fresh vegetables and proteins.

Last week we did some shopping for her and got her salads and blueberries which she absolutely loves. She’s been eating those as her midafternoon snack and says she’s feels so much better than eating a cookie. And her sight seems better.

Need to call the local meals on wheels as she’s signed up but has yet to get any delivered. Her social worker isn’t happy with that either.

Cannot get back up to my house until Friday and I’m worried that she’ll have nothing but milk sandwiches. May have to get a local friend to bring her stuff.

It sounds like she needs the services of a pro bono lawyer. Niece was not very smart. She’s 95, how much longer would she have had to bring meals? And now Neighbor will have the option to leaving everything to a local cat shelter.

Sherry's avatar

Funny you say that about the cat shelter. She used to be a foster cat mom.

I thought about her creating a charitable foundation where she can leave her assets and what was close to her heart. This, equine programs and the local teeny theatre. Her legacy could last for a long time.

Now you just need to find her a lawyer that needs some pro bono hours and loves cats and justice. And karma.

Just finished a cupfull of WM 'popcorn children, I mean Chicken', (still in recovery mode),

and realized I'm being held together by meat-glue.

No wonder it's taking so long to heal up.

I'm happy to report that a PAC (FF Pac) supporting Mme VP is spending on TV ads here in deep red South Texas, they run on a pretty heavy rotation too! I also noticed she is buying in game ads that run on mobile phone games which I presume include geographic info. Swinging for the fences!

"If you’re unsure what gold looks like, I would suggest consulting with Simone Biles." (Nice!) Or the British equestrian athletes and their riders!

Thank you for this versatile recipe. We make cookies regularly, but have never caramelized white chocolate. Look forward to trying. Plus, Cookie Monster is a mensch.

I oftentimes come here to say that I am no longer a sweets eater - just not my thing any longer - but a good old-fashioned Toll House chocolate chip cookie off of the back off the Nestle package that has been FROZEN is one of the best throwbacks to childhood happiness that I can imagine. Mmmmm. (My Mom would bake huge batches - I would help, as the oldest and a dedicated batter fiend at that age - and then we would freeze tons of them in our basement standup freezer.)

But did you have the Easy-Bake Oven?

Oblio's Cap's avatar

I was reading my bag of bag of grass seed on the porch and realize that "sombre" apparently means shade.

Does "sombrero" mean "little shade?"

Michael's avatar

U read grass-seed-bags?

So sorry.

Oblio's Cap's avatar

I read any written word within seeing distance.

Sleepmonger's avatar

You probably won't see this, but the suffix "-ero/a" denotes an object that serves a function somehow related to the noun or verb. So sombrero would mean an object that creates/provides shade.

More nuances and examples here: https://lingualista.wordpress.com/2017/05/23/useful-spanish-suffixes-the-case-of-eroa/

Michael's avatar

Helps to understand ' others'. They appreciate that you even tried.

Militant Agnostic's avatar

Not sure, but I think it is more like "shade-maker".

Along those lines, umbrella means "little shadow".

ETA: "little shade" would be "sombrito"

Google translate returned “hat.”

I love cookies.

The yard is mowed, hanging stuff is towed. Gas cans are full. We're ready as we're going to be for Debby.

Inshallah, now.

Cookie Monster, what is good in life? To eat the cookies. To see them piled before me. To hear the lamentations of the bakers.

Carol Hayden's avatar

It is my childish habit to sometimes speak to cookies as I am a devouring monster and they are trying to talk me out of eating them.

Well...peel me off of the ceiling.

When you are sitting in front of the wide open window enjoying the cooler, rain-washed morning air while focused in rapt attention watching a video if a police car parked just across the backyard outside of that window suddenly turns their SIREN on and takes off after someone or something it's just a tad startling.

Damn, I knew I should have done a pancake or crepe recipe.
