I grew up before the internet existed. Well, not as we know it. I'd have to hold all kinds of information in my head.
I got pissed off with The Kids when the internet came along. "Yeah, nice, but that's just google knowledge" because any fuck can google a thing. Knowing is different. How the fuck can you have a decent conversation in the pub if you don't know anything? Get your phone out? Fuck off.
Now we have AI. I could probably have a decent bat at "religious references in Stendhal's Scarlet and Black" right now. I'd be better if I had the book in front of me. Now you just type that shit in as a prompt and get a clippy++ spew.
Donald Trump and his MAGA movement are not "Conservatives' in the true sense. Nor are televangelists In both instances they are unscrupulous charlatans who exploit traditional values held by those who could be regarded as marginally informed. They prey upon decent people and garner their support through deceit and trickery, Their supporters are victims of this well orchestrated con game, our fellow Americans We must continue to educate people and be patient. The MAGA base cannot be viewed as enemies They are good people who have been drawn into this web of deceit,. much like children who have fallen victim to cult leaders.
None of the MAGA I know are good people and most are willingly ignorant fucking losers. Maybe 2016's dupes could be forgiven, but now it's voluntarily abetting fascism.
Besides, do you think they DON'T view US as enemies? Have you met any of these fucking people in real life?
You pedo/sexual predator protecting piece of SHIT.
At this time in history I am currently contemplating toxic levels of unmitigated HATRED that I didn't even know I was remotely capable of. I want to inflict some PAIN on these pricks.
"Has he ever met fuckface on that whole creating evidence thing?"

I read that one of the reasons the Republicans are so flaccid in their duty and so fierce in their shielding of the predators is because they're protecting their donors
Hey Wonks. I'd like to share what just happened to me. Ya know when you see something that strikes you down with uncontrollable ugly sobbing and tears that won't stop, but you're somehow laughing through the tears and uncontrollable ugly sobbing? Yeah, that happened to me. To quote my heroine Dolly Parton "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion" - Steel Magnolia's
Here's what happened. I think I've already told you I've had an enormous crush on Harrison Ford for a very long time. I've been watching everything this man has been in front of the camera for for years. Everything he touches is gold in my shining stupid eyes. However, Shrinking is the best of everything. The lastest season and the first episode of the season just dropped on Apple. Michael J. Fox is in this episode. I'm crying again because it's that fucking good. I found this and want to see what your reactions are. This is amazingly beautiful, right? Tell me I'm fucking right! Just gut punchingly fabulous and everything that is wonderful.
It's lovely, Holly. I don't know whether or not I could watch it. One of my oldest and dearest friends has been stricken with Parkinson's. She has been a dancer since her teens, and is one of the world's foremost experts in MENAT (middle eastern, North African, Turkic) dance and music. When they bought their house together, her friend/student took the first floor and basement; my friend (I've known her since 1970) took the second floor and attic. They're going to put in an elevator for when she can't walk anymore. It's so heartbreaking.
I have a friend from childhood whom I haven't heard from in years who called the family house when I was away on business
Our families were close when we were in HS, so he let my mother know (or she & his mother were talking) that he's ill too ... but she's left it to me to get the details so I don't know how far it's progressed yet
It is heartbreaking. Tens of billions to these criminals and no money for public health for those who suffer
So many people have floated through life without facing much adversity. They can't concieve of compassion and empathy because they have never had to use them. Serious illness, serious poverty, serious addiction, or serious loss changes one to embrace empathy and compassion.
My neighbor has beaten addiction, poverty/homelessness, and has not one ounce of empathy or compassion. She enjoys her inner grade-school mean girl identity.
Have you seen any post-nuclear holocaust films and TV shows, or read any books about it? Something like "Alas Babylon" (1959 novel) or "Threads" (1984 British TV miniseries)? What happens is people turn violent and start to kill complete strangers for food, alcohol, medicine and tobacco. Meanwhile, all of the diabetics and cancer patients die in a few weeks.
That hit me hard too, as did the entire truth of fascism. That is, it does not fucking care who it comes for. The first country to be invaded by the Nazis was Germany herself.
I was told by a friend that her grandsons have never been taught fractions or decimals in their schools. I hope that's not true everywhere. I was taught this in 6th grade.
What young people in the US today seem to have a problem with is making change. I give a $10 bill plus a quarter to a cashier to pay a $9.25 bill so that I can get a $1 bill back, and they have no idea what to do.
What a lot of the kids can't do is tell time via an analogue clock. When they disallowed them from having cell phones in school, kids would raise their hands and ask how much time was left in the class, even though there was a clock above the classroom door.
My mother taught me to read a clock before I even started school. She also taught me to read, and to print, and to add and subtract, all before I started school. When I was in kindergarten she taught me to write in cursive.
Parents don't seem to do that these days. BTW, my mother worked full time too, as a nurse, so "I'm too busy" is not an excuse.
I read about that and I was appalled. I also read that 40% of graduating high school seniors do not know who was President during the American Civil War.
Speaking of dire, I sometimes lurk on r/Professors to see what the state of university education is like. It is dire and really shocking, especially the students. The entitlement, carelessness, laziness, cheating, defiance. I'm gobsmacked. They are clueless and don't even try.
And they don't read books. I began to devour every book I could find as soon as I was taught to read when I was 4. At first I refused to learn to read, thinking that if I didn't, I wouldn't have to go to school (where did I get that idea? No clue.). My mother explained that if I didn't go to school, she and/or my dad could go to jail, and that motivated me a lot.
I no longer enroll in any grocery loyalty programs, ever since the biggest and most popular grocery in my previous town informed all their members in early 2013 that all their personal data had been stolen and sold on the Dark Web by...one of their employees - a young man who worked in their IT department. We all had to contact our banks and get new account numbers and debit cards, and then update all the places on the internet to whom we had given that information, such as Amazon and PayPal. The breach affected roughly 2.4 million payment cards used at 79 of Schnucks' 100 stores located in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. The banks weren't happy about it either.
"Of course they do if there's no law to stop them."
Exactly
I really really need White people who claim to believe in democracy not necessarily to reckon with their brainwashed Confederate relatives - they're lost - but to do everything they can to reason with and/or drag whomever they're related to in the 90 million who couldn't be bothered to vote to not screw it up this time
The last time a man offered to buy me a drink I asked for a Coca-Cola, because I was the designated driver. He brought me a Rum-and-Coke. I didn't even have to take a sip, because I could smell the rum as soon as I put the glass to my lips. Did he think I wouldn't notice? Idiot.
BTW, this was in a pub in Loch Ness, Scotland, and the guy was very drunk. He invited me to go "look at his boat". I said "I've seen boats, so no thanks."
It was really a very funny experience. The guy was there with his best friend, and both were drunk, but the pub had Karaoke that night, and the best friend got up to sing. He sang quite well, and his friend said "I've known him all my life and I had no idea he could sing! I'm stocked and shunned!" Except he didn't realize he had said it wrong because he was drunk. The friend I was traveling with and I often said to each other "I'm stocked and shunned" and then we laughed like crazy, but nobody else had any idea why we were laughing.
My friend died of cancer in 2015, and now I have nobody to say "I'm stocked and shunned!" to and then laugh hysterically. So sad.
The ICON of modern "conservatism" Barry Goldwater would be horrified by the MAGA movement Goldwater was much maligned, and still is, by Liberals.. However, he championed individual rights and was a "radical" environmentalist, He also despised the religious right, and once said he'd like kick Jerry Falwell in the nuts. He likewise thought that Nixon's Southern Strategy:" would be the death of the GOP. He believed that welcoming the homeless "Dixiecrats" into the GOP was a horrible idea He had this to say...
“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the Republican party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”

Many of them And have been successful in turning them. Very few are in reality racist or misogynistic. They just have been sold a lie
Good people who just happen to be attracted to racism and misogyny?
They don't openly call it that, but rather "traditional values" As I said 'deceit and trickery" They utilize fear, a powerful motivational tool
It's not 'deceit and trickery' when it is blatant.
That is the most effective form of deceit and trickery. It's not racism and misogyny but rather traditional values and Bible teachings.
Very nice cake! I subscribe to Marissa Rothkopf's Substack and she has this recipe for chocolate cake:

I'd say it's a moral imperative.

In our house, we call cucumbers "salad chips".
That's awesome! XD
We need a nationwide referendum on dismantling the GOP.
It's time to dump it into the trash bin of history, nail the lid shut, and send it/them on a one-way trip to Mars.

That hit me hard too, as did the entire truth of fascism. That is, it does not fucking care who it comes for. The first country to be invaded by the Nazis was Germany herself.
The "go along, get along" only works until you're next on the list.
As I have always said, proud chickens strutting their way to the dinner table.
The wealthy Germans learned that the hard way.
I always divide suggested serving numbers by 2
There are serving numbers ?
I always double it.
"Serves 4"
Welp, that'll do me and my friend for one evening then
I multiply them by 1/2.
Works much better, you should try it!
That's that new math I've been hearing about.
I was told by a friend that her grandsons have never been taught fractions or decimals in their schools. I hope that's not true everywhere. I was taught this in 6th grade.
It's definitely taught in the UK.
I'm very glad to hear it.

That happened to us Friday night. The cashier didn't understand why I should get $1 back. I knew that much arithmetic when I was seven or eight.
Kiddo got that instruction in NYC public school.
What a lot of the kids can't do is tell time via an analogue clock. When they disallowed them from having cell phones in school, kids would raise their hands and ask how much time was left in the class, even though there was a clock above the classroom door.
I can still use a slide rule, helpfully.
I made a clock with Star Wars stickers replacing the numbers.
Grandkids don't like "It's a quarter past Chewbacca."
They go into the kitchen and look at the microwave.
I read about that and I was appalled. I also read that 40% of graduating high school seniors do not know who was President during the American Civil War.
We had a War ?
It's really dire. The amount students don't know when they arrived in my college classroom was shameful and heartbreaking.
And most of them didn't care.
Speaking of dire, I sometimes lurk on r/Professors to see what the state of university education is like. It is dire and really shocking, especially the students. The entitlement, carelessness, laziness, cheating, defiance. I'm gobsmacked. They are clueless and don't even try.

I've been reading this book, "The Wrong Stuff", about the Soviet space program

They called the US cowboys. Jebus man, they were nuts.
eta: they had some amazingly talented people, but the way they did it? insane
Maybe they lied and the photos weren't real. It's a distinct possibility.
Shameful!
Not true everywhere. Kids here start learning fractions, to some degree, in kindergarten.
"She drank 1/2 or .5 of my juice box ! "
Yeah my daughter (in CA) started learning very rudimentary fraction concepts in K.
I would not be at all surprised.
I convert to binary, shift the digits right by one, and then convert back to decimal.
That ought to keep the pounds off.

In the old days, you could look like a cool person by telling the bartender "Put the laydees drink on my tab! "
Today I tell the pharmacy clerk to put my co-pay on my credit card.
Not quite as impressive.

Wouldn't work today ... the unreconstructed wouldn't get it.
Didn't really work then either.
Kennedy's assassination made LBJ pretty much a shoe in
there's an old Benz in town which sports a "Kennedy-Johnson" bumper sticker (but the sticker is actually a reprint, and of more recent vintage)
Until less than a year ago a house in town was sporting a small "I like Ike" sign in the front yard.
Got to be careful with those two names today.
Also, with Dry January over, can we have Wet February?
Wet Ass February
February is Black History Month, and I just read this morning that the Kennedy Center does not have one single event scheduled to celebrate it, because all the relevant artists pulled out. So to answer your question, Yes, I think we deserve Wet February.
[seethes with unmitigated FURY]
If people were really thinking, they would have dry February as it is the shortest month of the year.
[the local 'feels like' temperature is BELOW ZERO ffs, soooo
look out for ICE!!]
I suppose I will have to dig the car out of the snow somehow and go to the store, because I'm out of beer. I wonder how many people have taken on this horrific domestic winter chore only because they ran out of their favorite intoxicating substances...or ran out of cigarettes.
