When I commented about paid family leave on yesterday's post about vaccine schedules, I didn't know this was coming down the pipeline.

So sim.

Sorry to see him hounded for doing his job.

Ta, Robyn. Tim Walz should be our Vice President. Republican ratfucking, voter suppression, and more than a little racism and misogyny kept him out of the office he deserved.

coco lurks from home's avatar

Not the biggest fan of hers, but Amy Klobuchar will be the next governor if she wants it. I'd like to think that Walz could take her Senate seat but I doubt he'd regard that as a solution to the harassment.

And at 74, Al Franken might be past his sell-by date for either office, which is too damned bad.

Klobs was just re-elected and Tina Smith isn't running this year, which means both seats could be open.

I fear you are correct. And I have a Klobs critique that is as long as your arm.

California has a similar system, and it allowed me to have six weeks of paid leave to fully recover after a major abdominal surgery in late September. Being able to pay my bills and focus on my physical therapy and my post-operative appointments took so much stress off me and allowed me to heal properly. I am so glad Minnesotans are getting this help, and it’s criminal that so few states offer it.

Indeed. It's like FMLA, except useful.

I don't think enough people heard about this yesterday/

Bad cop goes into family home and shoots family dog.

Zyxomma's avatar

This is all too common. Radley Balko covered this at length in Rise of the Warrior Cop: the Militarization of America's Police Forces.

The G-7 Experience's avatar

Is it bad training or the general "I can do anything I want to" attitude that causes this/?

I know. WTF was that cop doing just strolling into the house--no warrant, nothing. Phecking outrageous! Poor doggo is right. I wish I was a sorceress; I'd invoke that dog's spirit to haunt that arsehole cop until the day he dies so that he never forgets what he has done. People who casually kill animals (you know who you are Noem) are lower than scum.

I was really alarmed in the immediate aftermath of the Hortman murders because, in between the Hoffman shooting and the Hortmans' murders, a local police officer encountered the killer (in New Hope, MN) in his fake cop car and let him drive away. My right-wing conspiracy alarm was wailing.

Pigs always protect each other.

Michael P Peck's avatar

But they are really trying to implicate Tim Walz in this, on the theory he had the Hortmans killed to perpetuate the human-services fraud scheme he has been running with Somalis! The killer wants to tell this story in open court, telling the judge at his arraignment: “I’m looking forward to court and I’m looking forward to the truth and facts of the 14th to come before you,” he said in a clear voice. “I think Minnesotans want to know what’s going on.”

GOP assholes will say/do anything to retain power. They’re so far from Christian, Muslim, or any humanist or legal civil group. You might call them ‘Evil Motherfuckers.’

I watched the car being towed and it looked like the windshield was intact. He shot her through the driver side window.

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

He was afraid she'd get away.

Right. No justification.

Minneapolis demonstrated to all of us they wouldn’t put up with a cop killing even if the cop was white and local. They don’t have to put with a cop killing by a fed.

The G-7 Experience's avatar

They put up with it initially- they tried to cover it up.

Trouble with gop politicians, in my experience, is that gop politicians are inexperienced. They understand they don’t know what they’re doing. So they blindly latch on to the nationally produced talking points, without stopping to think about whether they make sense at the local level, or even at the national level. If they could just stop and think about what they’re saying or doing, they’d still be “conservatives” but they might not come across being as so mean.

Looks like ICE is moving on to roving murder squad. They should be banned as a criminal organization and prosecuted individually.

Russell Jones's avatar

That's been coming for a long time, at least since that video was going around months ago in which a bunch of masked ICE fat fucks were beating the shit out of a handcuffed detainee while another masked ICE fat fuck was holding a pistol "whangsta" style and pointing it directly at the windshields of passing cars.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Anyone they don’t like or shoot accidentally is a “domestic terrorist,” just like in Gaza.

Prometheus59650's avatar

Yeah, I've seen the video of the shooting.

Her car is just sitting there and ICE-y Fife just saunters right over there, starts screaming. She tries to drive away, NOT at him, then...pop, pop, pop.

Just fucking cold blood.

AND, if you get a long enough clip, they just let him leave the scene.

No doubt to let him go home and scrub his socials.

Lee Reader's avatar

ICEy Fife! You go!

He mighta also had to clean up a bit. Smegma undies might belie that "terrified for my coworkers" tale of horror that other nonexistent eminations might have bolstered. Although, once the video is casually viewed, the latter would likely evidence his cowardice, so whatever he had to stroll (really fast) out of there to do before reporting to the hospital was problematic for the cause.

Chino Cherokee's avatar

Did all the ICE fucks high five him?

They'll rot in hell.

The G-7 Experience's avatar

I'm sure they are buying him beers and Noem hugs incoming...

Bobathonic, Dingus Crusher's avatar

Also too he needs to clean his weapon and other evidence.

Elviouslyqueer's avatar

Watching Walz go completely scorched earth on the reporters is delightful. "Why are you not calling them out?" MORE OF THIS.

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

Noem should be fired for attempting to cover this up.

Lee Reader's avatar

Isn't there, you know, a law about public officials making blatantly untruthful statements and declarations to deliberately mislead the populace?

Just curious.

“Rioters” get the fuck out with that histrionic bullshit. Yelling “Get the fuck out of our neighborhood” is not rioting.

Queen Méabh's avatar

And driving your car away at 5mph in the opposite direction is not "weaponizing a vehicle."

swmnguy's avatar

I've seen rioters. They torched a number of blocks of Lake Street in Minneapolis, a dozen blocks from my house (and 4 blocks north of where today's murder happened).

They were white kids from rural areas who came into town for the fun of it, almost exclusively. The ones who were tried and convicted were.

The "rioters" in today's incident are largely schoolteachers, librarians, social services employees. More gay and lesbian than the general population. People who own their homes outright and have Equality bumperstickers on their Subaru wagons and Nissan Leafs.

Or, for short, my neighbors.

Smoke O'Possum's avatar

I'm so sorry for them, for you, for all of us witnessing what has become of our government in the hands of these angry, violent, hateful animals.
