The problem with Israel is that, as a matter of policy, it apparently holds two somewhat opposing beliefs at the same time:

1. It has a "victim" mentality in that it believes itself to be not only under constant threat because of their religion and ancestry, but also the *only* "democracy" in the area and; thus; a political threat to their neighboring states.

2. It *also* seems to believe that, because of its place in Biblical lore and history, it will *ALWAYS* have the backing of American Evangelicals, conservatives, Republicans and the U.S. Government -- specifically the U.S. Congress -- and can pick fights with it's neighbors and just generally behave badly with what basically amounts to impunity.

Unfortunately, this has given the conservatives in the Israeli government the impression that they are our 51st state with all of the privileges (Defense, subsidies, etc.) and none of the responsibilities. (i.e. Taxes)

Yeah it's bizarre to watch earnest journalist's wax lyrical about handsy Joe while a admitted sexual assaulter sits/slouches in the oval office.
