The problem is they need to cult to win elections. Without the cultists voting for them, the seditionists cannot possibly win enough elections to maintain power. Their problem is if and when appeasing the cult makes them less appealing to slightly less ignorant and insane "suburban" types whose votes they also need.

Whole point of the attack on the turtle is to demonstrate he can throw you under the bus, represented by his base, if you don’t debase yourself.
