"NASA has also invited proposals from universities and corporations to take over the cost of collecting and analyzing the data from OCO-3, aboard the ISS, so there’s that, too."

Trump will just defund any universities and take away tax breaks from any corporation that does so.

Can’t they crash some old satellite that’s no longer used and just tell the Fanta FΓΌhrer it was the OCO? They can use it again after the regime is gone, or just transfer control to a less insane/stupid country.

BTW, Substack (not just Wonkette) seems to have a problem now where I can’t post comments from a computer with any browser. At least the phone app is working.

Yes, crash an obsolete satellite. Trumpy is too stupid to know the difference.

Lynn Veit's avatar

That was one thought I had as well. Sell it to a stable country with a vested stake in averting climate disaster. Hell, just transfer ownership for free. Since they're being ordered to crash it anyway, it's not like they'd lose anything.

Yeah, I can't stand typing on a phone, either. OK for reading, but not for interaction. It's a bit like trying to drive a car using a donut as the steering wheel.

Touch screens in general are awful for typing. A tablet will have nearly a full size keyboard on the screen, but it's horrible to try to type with it.

Trump may think (which is asking a lot... I doubt he thinks) that the "free market" will pick up the OCO project .. like Musk or somebody, but wouldn't be surprised to see the Europeans, the Russians, the Chinese, the Indians... heck, the Brazilians.. to pick up the project. Better still, I expect all the other counties with space agencies to start poaching NASA's people.

Lynn Veit's avatar

The sooner the better. It's not like they're appreciated here anymore. We need them to be able to do their work, even if it's in another country.

I say this as one whose parents allowed me as a small child to stay up with them until the wee hours of the morning to watch the first moon landing in 1969, and who became an avid fan of outer space in early elementary school. I still remember the cover of my third grade science textbook - a splendid rendition of the solar system in vivid color. The planets, the sun, the stars in the background. I was hooked on science and space exploration from a very early age. If we lose NASA, I hope it is at least to another country.

And we won't be able to use data from other countries because it's not proper AMERICAN data and is therefore tainted and biased.

As long as it's COLLECTED, and preserved. And no useful expensive satellites are destroyed for no good reason except the Vile Orange Cretin's fragile ego.

Maybe (and I know this is no guarantee) someday we will be able to use that data again, and it would be a good thing to have an uninterrupted stream to work with.

This is all very sad. President TACO want to slash NASA's budget in half, targeting mostly their scientific missions while leaving the big drains, like the SLS rocket and Orion alone. NASA doesn't have a big budget and cutting it in half only destroys the serious work scientists are doing, Meanwhile billions (with a B) are being wasted on disappearing harmless immigrants, harassing universities and coating the White House in gold. The Vandals are in the house.

I wonder if the Democrats could institute a legal action to charge Vought, Duffy, and Trump personally for the cost of the satellites and instruments, and destruction of government property and get a lien slapped on them to freeze, and then sieze, their personal assets to pay the damages.

It's what Texas Rethugs would do. There are plenty of rational, law-abiding, progressive judges out there.

Step up and bring an Uzi to this knife-fight, Democrats!!!

NASA should take a page from the TRADE NEGOTIATIONS playbook and just tell the Mad King that they burned it up over Russia just to freak them out while actually leaving it parked in orbit until sanity and justice return to the US. Then we can go back to science as God intended.

After all, it didn't take long for the rest of the world to tell that moron how much they really appreciated the opportunity to pinky-swear that they were going to invest all the billion$ in his bullshit ideas and buy all the things and here's a piece of paper that outlines the concept of the plan and you can go now your magnificence...
