Saw a fascinating show re: after the A-bombs how the military had different factions like in Germany. The realists knew it was all over, the fanatics wanted to drown Japan in blood, they even had pitched battles before the sane ones prevailed.

From Pulp Fiction:

I think Japanese soldiers had started to surrender during the loss of Okinawa but I think it is totally reasonable to say invading the mainland would have been a suicidal bloodbath. I don't think we really understand the religious fundamentalism of the time and it's power. Hirohito was no Hitler, his power was not born of his Trumpian con job abilities, his power was born of religion, he could have been a animated lasagne and people would have followed. I think the fact that civilians had never heard his voice till his surrender radio announcement perfectly illustrates his mythical power. People died for him not ever hearing a word from his mouth.
