I had not known, before I read a book by Masha Gessen, that Stalin did indeed set up an autonomous region for Jews in Russia. Jews flocked there, only to find that there was absolutely no housing. Well, OK, there was some, but not enough to keep out the horrors of Siberian winters. It was supposed to be a place where Yiddish could be spoken, read, written. An intellectual paradise for Jews. And then, of course, Stalin decided that this autonomous republic was a bad idea, and threw the Jews out.

They were sent back to Germany. I doubt that many, if any, survived. But I would indeed have to research that. We live in evil times. We have lived in evil times. And evil times seem to be continuing. I feel utterly discouraged.
