Re: the update,

The church elders absolutely knew he was preying on kids. They're just lying to save face.

TerseNurse's avatar

It's never the drag queens. It's always that self-righteous dude who tells you that you're going to go to hell for jerking off.

Zyxomma's avatar

Ta, Robyn. One look at that face and I would take my (hypothetical) child far, far away.

Anzu's avatar

I'm am glad the update indicates that there is still at least a fragment of shame to be had in some churches around the MAGA cult.

Lucius's avatar

Not shame, optics. They don't give a shit about the actual sexual assault. If they did it never would have gone on so long. They only care about their reputation being tarnished.

Shame implies that they're capable of empathy, and they absolutely aren't.

Amanda Maricotte has a good column in today's slate on this story, tying it with how religion groom woman to be passive and tell men that they can take what they want.

An evangelical dude.

end the statute of limitation for child sex abuse

For financial crimes also. They take so long to investigate. I don't really understand why getting away with a crime for a while should mean getting away with it forever.

Anzu's avatar

It used to be that the crime would be much, much harder to prove the longer it sat, and if someone was willing to sit on good evidence for a long time, then it obviously wasn't that big a deal to them, right?

Modern science and modern investigation methods means that crimes from decades ago are now suddenly solvable, and there's no reason to assume that "old" crimes are rusted and can't be proven any more.

Pexas Teat's avatar

That's a great point, and explained clearly. Thanks!

“Trump spiritual adviser” is now a synonym for “sexual predator.” Everyone around him is scum.

Darth Trad's avatar

The police are there to stop people from robbing THEM of property. Things that have value to them and represent wealth. Not to perform secular judgements of what they do in private. Which is none of the police's business.

Lionel “8647” Hutz's avatar

Just a question: What does it take to be one of the proven rapist, fraud and convicted felon Trump's spiritual adviors other than you need a robe and to stand at one of the points of the pentagram chanting?

Rick Jacobs's avatar

OMG, how is this fuck not in prison?

Wookiee Monster's avatar

Because, Jesus. Once you declare your imaginary friend has forgiven you, nothing you’ve done is a crime.

Unless you’re nonwhite.

I went down a small rabbit hole concerning my something-or-other cousin (both parents are only children. I don't know fuckall about familial relations because I can't relate it to my own life).

He was a Monsignor in the Los Angeles Catholic Diocese back in the mid-20th century.

Googling his name, I get results with all sorts of PDF's for correspondence with a Monsignor in England about a priest being transferred to L. A. because of inappropriate relations with a young man (man doing some heavy lifting).

tl;dr: The Los Angeles Diocese did not think these concerns would be an issue for the parishioners of the diocese.

meh's avatar

Our local parish had a number of those priests, into the 1990s. It was a working-class enclave and the church figured it had the parishioners cowed. It didn't, and the local courts got involved. The church, as usual, claimed that the county didn't have jurisdiction, but charges of molestation and rape did stick.

Revenant's avatar

I just can't, anymore. The Dear Leader, who the Q-bats say is going to round up all the kiddy diddlers for execution, OF COURSE has a real live unapologetic groomer on staff.

Wookiee Monster's avatar

It’s a trap. You see, Trump is luring all the kid touchers into his orbit and once he has them all as his “spiritual advisers,” the lid will come down and he’ll round them all up.

Anzu's avatar

This is, unironically, what just happened.

Revenant's avatar

A likely story, yep

Froglooksfunny's avatar

If he really had repented, she wouldn’t have had to sue for therapy money. He would have given it gladly as reparations

Zen Gali's avatar

but that would "ruin everything."

Wookiee Monster's avatar

If he had really repented, he wouldn’t be referring to a child as a “young lady.”

Maybe's avatar

This sounds like the sort of thing a trump spiritual advisor would do.

Bex1203's avatar

Well, I wish I was surprised that the PAB would pick a dude as gross as Morris to be his 'spiritual advisor', but sadly, I'm not surprised. In fact, it makes sense, they have some things in common, disgustingly, admiring young girls and very young women's bodies. You think you've read the worst, and then.... 🤢🤢🤢

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

They think they're so much better than pedophiles because they're only attracted to post-pubescent children.

diogenez's avatar

Does anyone else read the phrase "walked in purity" as purely dressed up bullshit?

meh's avatar

It's christian-ese for "don't you dare hold me to account for raping children."

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

His shoes did looked a bit scuffed for someone who'd been walking in purity.

Lucius's avatar

It's christianese for "I said sorry to my imaginary friend so you don't get to hold it against me, and if you try them you just hate Christians and jebus."

Bex1203's avatar

Hell yeah, what's that even mean?

Wookiee Monster's avatar

It means, “I haven’t been caught since.”

human being's avatar

Yes, and how exactly would he have described how he was “walking” before?

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

Before wasn't his fault. It was Satan's.

CambridgeKnitter's avatar

I suspect it bears no resemblance to walking in beauty.
