I think maybe, just maybe, Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein has whispered in Sessions's ear that Trump is a dirty Russian asset and headed for a fall in the Mueller investigation. Sessions was wise to there being collusion during the campaign, especially after ambassador Kislyak paid him a special visit at his senate office in Sept. 2016. But I think Sessions is still enough of a patriot to draw the line at Trump's being so compromised by Russia that he'd put its interests ahead of his own nation's. At the very least, Sessions would want to have sufficient separation from Trump so as not to go down down in the history books as his protector or bitch.
While the cynic in me agrees, I think we have 3 strong points in our favor:
1. The kids are mad as hell about a lot of things, and fired up to vote democrat, and every year, a million TeaPubs shuffle off to the big KKK rally in the sky
2. Even a lot of traditional Republicans will draw the line at treason
3. Turnout is everything, the Trump trainwreck showed all the no-show voters what happens when they stay home to binge-watch Star Trek or Cheers on Election Day
