Man, voting and elections matter. Hobbs barely beat that lunatic in 22, and this surely was impossible otherwise. AZ even indicted the giggle-gang of fake electors in the same state that spent like $6 million to the Cyber Ninjas to use black lights on ballots hunting for traces of Chinese bamboo in the Great Fraudit. The result? Biden was shorted a few votes. AZ is in danger of falling way behind Texas, SD and Florida for wackiest wingnutty states. (Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and a few others are hopeless thus left off the list).

Ta, Robyn. Somewhere between 37% and 50% of all first trimester pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion, better known as miscarriage. If these assholes want to bring their god into the conversation, they should take that up with Him. He's the Abortionist in Chief.

Speaking of Ceaușescu again, some people may not remember that one of the outcomes of his "no abortion, no birth control" policies was the Romanian state orphanage system- bleak, overcrowded, and with rampant abuse of children.

I knew someone who'd actually grown up in a Romanian orphanage before being adopted by a Canadian family after 1989. She was a surprisingly small person, in part because she had been malnourished in childhood. She also used to say that girls in the orphanages were trained to either be gymnasts or sex workers.

Romania's history is a long, sad story of it getting fucked over by outsiders, and in the interim periods fucking itself over. I visited as a boy in the late 90's, the poverty and desolation from Soviet rule (even in Bucharest) was pretty shocking.

This is a sort-of Nice Times, but I definitely hope it brings out the voters to overturn the 15-week ban and elect Ruben Gallego (and Biden/Harris) in November.

I don’t understand why the GQP thinks 15 weeks is a reasonable compromise. The vast majority of abortions occurring after that point - but pre-viability - are because of maternal health issues and/or fatal fetal abnormalities. It’s not like women decide to carry a fetus for 22 weeks and then say, “nah.”

Frank Luntz probably got the 15 week line from his focus group testing.

The Republican idea of a woman seeking a later abortion seems to be a person who carries a pregnancy nearly to term, enduring all the incredibly not-fun bits of bearing a child (often alone), and then on a malicious whim decides to abort the child anyway, possibly while laughing maniacally.

In other words, their conception of morality isn't that much more advanced or nuanced than that of a Disney movie. An *early* Disney movie.

NONE of these so-called "compromises" are remotely rational or acceptable, but it's not as if that matters to those imposing these restrictions. This is not now and never has been all about protecting life.

This is ALL about subjugation of more than half this nation's registered voters; THAT'S what it is.

"...but it’s turned out that a lot of people who liked abortion bans in theory do not like them very much when they become reality."\

Very true. When Roe was still the law, it was easy to say "well, I oppose abortion" because you were only dealing with an abstract idea of banning it. People who were uncomfortable with the idea of abortion but never had to deal with the dirty work of "how to ban it" could rest easy, voting for Republicans. It's sort of like how a "ban trans women from ladies' bathrooms" is more popular until you get down to "ok, how are you going to enforce it--check everyone's genitals? Can you see why we don't want that???"

If there's any silver lining about these bans going into practice, it's that casual observers will start to realize that 15 weeks is pretty damn restrictive (especially when several of those weeks are spent not knowing your pregnant yet), and "wait, my late term miscarriage is now subject to police investigation as an illegal abortion?" rears its ugly head. Maybe more voters will revolt against this.

Louise Pattison's avatar

They also get confused when you posit this: a trans man, presenting as male, with a beard, is forced by your trans bathroom bill to use the ladies. How do you know he is not a man pretending to be trans to get into the ladies room?
