And if their generation had given enough of a fuck to vote they would not be dying with college debt.
I will be impressed when they get their heads out of their asses and vote. But OMG TikTok will tell them not to, since they have the media literacy of fish.
I have mentioned that I am o-o-o-o-ld. Only because I am. Cut my teeth protesting the war in Vietnam. When my college had its commencement ceremony, one of the speakers was none other than Henry Kissinger. Ol’ Warmongering Henry himself. A group of us tied white armbands over our black robes and marched into the arena where the ceremony was being held. Didn’t make much of a ripple—the class numbered in the 1000s—but it felt good to take a stand.
Slow your roll there, Chica. Pick up a book, read a newspaper. MY generation is responsible for a lot of things, both good and bad. 1968 was an inflection point. I wasn't old enough to vote back then, but campaigned for Gene McCarthy anyway.
Unless you lived through those times (and I'm guess by your puerile comment that you did not) you have no idea what it was like), purity had nothing to do with Nixon getting elected in '68. There was a revolution under way and Nixon's election was a reaction to what was happening. Read Norman Mailer's excellent book 'Miami and the Siege of Chicago', which will give you some idea of what was going on in 1968.
Or not and just point fingers. It's what you do best.
Reality check: purity trashed LBJ for Kennedy's failures, trashed Gore for Nader electing W, and HRC for Bernie electing Trump 1.
Denying it helps no one. Denying it and demanding that we all forget it ensures it will happen again. It is the opposite of helpful. Nixon had the secret plan to end the war! Nader to solve climate change! Bernie MFA!
There is now way not to be aware of the Boomer generation's opinion of itself.
You wore armbands. I have been spat on, lived under death threats, and had my shit vandalized in no small part because of the empowerment of the right by purity voters. I am not going to pretend this is untrue for your feels.
Grow the hell up. What you're doing--pointing fingers--does nothing. Purity brought us Trump #1. Jill Stein, let's talk. Arab voters who couldn't bring themselves to vote for Harris brought us Trump #2.
You act like you're the only one who was beaten by the police, tear gassed, arrested, did time in jail for her beliefs. You're not.
You're the one who's acting all holier than thou. You're not.
Slow your roll. You have no idea what it was like back then. LBJ was a bad, bad guy. He sacrificed the Great Society to pay for the war in Vietnam. The Great Society was an outstanding plan and would have changed the entire face of this country, but no. He bought, hook line and sinker what the Pentagon was selling. Too macho, too Texas to see anything otherwise. Purity didn't punish LBJ for JFK's failures. Quite the opposite. LBJ could have written his own ticket in the aftermath of Kennedy's assassination. He's the one who destroyed himself.
When he lost one (ONE) primary early on, he quit he re-election campaign in 1968 and ceded the field. Bobby entered the race, looked like he was going to win the nom, won in California and paid with his life. There was hell to pay for everyone after Bobby died and so close to MLK 2 months before.
This country was in chaos. There were no purity tests. Not then. You've sold yourself a bill of goods and warped the narrative to fit your own philosophy. Not how it works.
Nadder deserved to be destroyed. He's all ego and cares only about himself. He's no environmentalist. He's all about Ralph Nader and doesn't care about anything else. It is Nader's fault (and the Republicans) that W Bush won Florida after multiple recounts. Crooked as the day is long. Nader was a spoiler.
Yeah, some of us are self-aware. Like I said, we're old. We've been here before. We've seen this before. But I'll be damned if I'll let someone else point fingers and call names because they have no perspective and find it easier to blame someone else, in fact, an entire generation of others for the failings of a few.
Again, denying it helps no one. Denying it and demanding that we all forget it ensures it will happen again. It is the opposite of helpful.
LBJ "destroyed himself" by signing the Civil Rights Act. LBJ passed the great society bills. JFK expanded the war, ordered the critical assassination. And its Nader oh mighty champion of doing the reading.
I am not going to eat your bullshit purity and call it ice cream. I am sure you and your self-esteem will be just fine. Boomers always are. They pulled the ladder up after them, buried future generations in debt, then preen about their awesomeness self-awareness.
I often see people write that red states should suffer for voting for 47. I find that as stupid and cruel as saying everyone in blue states are elitist and they should suffer.
Every place, every university has all kinds of people with differing opinions.
I've noticed that "[people] should ..." is very often vindictive. It rarely comes from a good place, and even if it comes from a good place you can more easily replace "should" with a different verb when you're wishing good things on them than when you're trying to control them.
I can't imagine the disappointment I would've felt, having been the first in my family to earn a degree, only to NEED to skip my graduation because this shit stain was giving the address.
Trump deserves "no respect, no respect," as Rodney Dangerfield used to say about himself (while adjusting his tie). But Rodney was only kidding. Trump really does deserve that level of disrespect: he is most likely the most incompetent and malevolent president we have ever had. Those college Dems in Alabama are on to him. Good for them.
Thank you, and please remember this story when you go off in the non-comments section saying shit like “Alabama deserves to have a Senator like Tommy Tuberville” and “Florida deserves Ron DeSantis/Trump.”
There ARE Good People down here.
And, one more thing: Roll Damn Tide.

From an Oregon public school teacher, good luck, KC. I know it's a lot rougher for, if I may use the expression, y'all than it is for me in liberal Eugene.
I’m so proud of those College Democrats.
Bravo!!!
And if their generation had given enough of a fuck to vote they would not be dying with college debt.

The letter is beautiful!

Roll Tide (from a Mizzou Tiger fan)--
I often see people write that red states should suffer for voting for 47. I find that as stupid and cruel as saying everyone in blue states are elitist and they should suffer.
Every place, every university has all kinds of people with differing opinions.
Good for these students. Good for them.
Agreed, but I am OK with the people who actually voted for him suffering. Problem is, you can't really separate THEM humans from US humans.
I've noticed that "[people] should ..." is very often vindictive. It rarely comes from a good place, and even if it comes from a good place you can more easily replace "should" with a different verb when you're wishing good things on them than when you're trying to control them.
Respect—from a Georgia Bulldog!
Ta, Evan. A thing of beauty, and beautifully described.
My nephew is graduating from Dakota State. They invited the dog killer to give the commencement address. He is sooo pissed off!
I can't imagine the disappointment I would've felt, having been the first in my family to earn a degree, only to NEED to skip my graduation because this shit stain was giving the address.
It could make things better if you went and struck up a ruckus!
Glad it's not footbaw season so I can say (without nausea) Roll Tide!
(Whispers a penitent Geaux Tigers! for using that phrase, and for the uneasy feeling that LSU students wouldn't be so forthright.)

Was just watching some RD on Carson clips the other day:
"I got into a cab and asked the driver to take me where all the hot action is and he took me to my house."
Thank you, and please remember this story when you go off in the non-comments section saying shit like “Alabama deserves to have a Senator like Tommy Tuberville” and “Florida deserves Ron DeSantis/Trump.”
