Summer 1969. I just graduated from high school. We were back in the U.S. after two years in Panama, and a girl I liked gave me the original Broadway soundtrack album for my birthday.
I've never seen the movie, but I knew what it was and could sing along with the sound off.
Of about a dozen young sailors, just wanting ANY way to get away from our boat for a few hours, I convinced about half to go see Hair at a suburban Charleston, SC theater. I was all apologetic afterwards, thinking that really wasn't up their alley for escapist entertainment. But most said, Oh no, I liked it. Submariners. Bunch of weirdos all.
I once ran into Michael Butler at the Zebra Lounge in Chicago. He was genial and hilarious. Invited us out to Oak Brook to watch some polo that weekend. It was 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 moment that I realized just which Michael Butler the fellow was...
I'm in that scene, wearing a big floppy hat. You can't pick me out, but Life Magazine took a picture of that crowd and put it on the cover. I was clearly visible there. Well, my hat was anyway.
Speaking of hats, I was in a Time magazine photo of a Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic. You can't quite make me out, but I was standing next to Big Tom, who was wearing one of the biggest cowboy hats I ever saw.
I remember watching Hair when it came out, and loving it. My favorite song from the film was "White Boys/Black Boys", second fav is "Good Morning, Starshine" (which is playing in my head).
I remember that, too. My sisters had a copy of the original Broadway soundtrack and my parents let them play it. I don't think they quite got the song (don't remember the name) that starts: Sodomy, Fellatio...
I love your gifs Martini - but I must admit I was a bit confused by the Gay Pride Pro-Palestinian Professional Protester being chased by a Holstein cow - later on I saw them riding the cows and it all made sense -
I had the album (cassette tape) when I was about 7. 1972, so there were some songs getting major radio airtime, and I suspect my parents bought it for me without any knowledge of the songs that *weren’t* on the radio. I tended to skip them, they weren’t as fun, so nobody noticed.
I was about the same age in 1972 and my parents had gone to see Hair and bought the soundtrack. I listened to it about a million times. Same with Jesus Christ Superstar, which I got to see last year during its resurrection (pun intended).
When I was living in downtown Portland apartment in the'70s my next door neighbor had a part in the PSU production of JCS. For hours on end he tried to do his best cover of Alan Spenner. Over and over and over again. He got me a pair of opening night tix
More information on Justice Alito and his wife Marsha-Ann. Might have to open multiple tabs just to keep up with all that MSNBC is reporting tonight. Justice Alito agreeing that we have to make the United States a Christian Nation again. Marsha-Ann being upset by the Pride Flag and saying that women who don't agree with Samuel Alito are "feminazis". I hope you like your tabs juicy.
I refuse to believe judge Cannon is just incompetent. She may certainly BE incompetent, but her pandering to Assmouth’s side is breathtaking in its obviousness.
That said, I saw that story, parents need to get a grip. You were warned. Did you honestly think your kid could just *stop the ship* to give them time to finish their excursion?
No, that would get the kid thrown in the brig or off the ship, now y'all gotta fly back.
Yes, Rebecca, a time machine would be very handy thing for the centrists. They could go back to 1968 and be all like "Yes, I know about Vietnam but what about NIXON???" Then zip back and miss the part where America got both.
I love that Michigan Central Station has been restored. I wish the same had been done for the iconic Hudson's building downtown. It could have been converted into lofts or offices, but was stupidly imploded instead.
The CNN story about Aileen Cannon says that " Cannon has dragged out the proceedings in ways that have flummoxed legal scholars" and flummoxed? Really? It's easy. Fuck you is why.
Alice Update: she approves of her loft addition, and made her way up there by herself in the night. I put a little stuffed cat up there, she pitched it overboard. Yesterday she threw it in the litter box. Message received, offending object removed from kennel. https://substack.com/@2cats2furious/note/c-58500549
She’s still very timid, but likes to be cuddled and to be brushed. The first time I did that, she gave the tiniest little purr. Yesterday when I pulled her out from under the dresser where she was hiding, she went in the kennel under her own steam, drank a lot of water, sniffed her food, went to the back corner and purred loudly.
I wonder if she’s just now finding her purr. From what I’ve heard, she came from a chaotic and dysfunctional place, and it appears that hiding is her default coping response.
I left a little bit of chicken breast on top of her food bowl last night. The chicken is gone this morning, along with a few ounces of her dried food. She has used the litter box, all systems go. She’s drinking. So I know her physical needs are being met, and that’s a big relief. Now it’s just a matter of giving her the time she needs to find her confidence and develop trust.
Time for her snuggle session. She seems to really thrive on the attention and the affection. She started to do biscuits yesterday and then stopped herself. It feels like she’s never had a chance to be a kitten, that she’s been on high alert survival mode from the earliest age. In the next couple of days, I want to see if she will respond to play invitations to build that predatory mojo.
Rebecca, Happy Birthday to your mom! And also to the Divine Ms. DR! And thank you, Martini, for clarifying today’s Tabs - for a moment, I thought, “hey, that’s not Godspell…”
My sister was born on my father's birthday, so when I came along, my mother tried to have me on her birthday (Feb. 11). She went out and hiked through snow drifts, trying to induce labor, but unfortunately I waited until Feb. 14. It was close enough, so we pretended and celebrated it on the 11th.

When I first moved to L.A., I knew a couple of brothers who worked for a construction company where every employee was required to go through Werner Erhard's EST seminar training. Eventually the brothers were among the beneficiaries of a rather large legal settlement.
Your hed gif today is taken from the movie "Hair." More info at the click: https://martiniambassador.substack.com/p/hair
I came here specifically to compliment the Oh Donna! spoof.
Hey, thanks Harry!
"Ohhh sayyy can you seeee, my eyes, if you can then my hair's too short!"
The movie was silly but the album is timeless.

LOL, I love it!
I love a gif I can sing along to. I was doing my own "follow the bouncing ball" on this one!

Saw the first openning night of Hair in Tejas - San Antonio.
I know that spot where that was filmed. I think. Trees seem smaller.
That is one of my favorite musicals. It is just magnificently performed and produced, the subject notwithstanding.
I am not a believer, but that show moves me nonetheless.
Hey! I was in that movie!
Woo-hoo! What's your favorite memory of the shoot?
Running with the crowd during "Aquarius".
That sounds fantastic!!
Wow! Did you go to the polo match with him?
We begged off, but were invited back for a polo event a few weeks later, got to see the Budweiser Clydesdales and drink beer with the hands.
We were on a long guest list and only got to see Butler for a minute. A very fine time anyway
I am in the movie - among the thousands near the Washington Monument
Brilliant
I'm in that scene, wearing a big floppy hat. You can't pick me out, but Life Magazine took a picture of that crowd and put it on the cover. I was clearly visible there. Well, my hat was anyway.
We must know each other, right?
Awesome
Speaking of hats, I was in a Time magazine photo of a Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic. You can't quite make me out, but I was standing next to Big Tom, who was wearing one of the biggest cowboy hats I ever saw.
Now I’ll have to watch the movie -
Very cool! I love that scene.
I remember watching Hair when it came out, and loving it. My favorite song from the film was "White Boys/Black Boys", second fav is "Good Morning, Starshine" (which is playing in my head).
Gliddy glub gloopy,
nibby nabby noopy!
My memories of the late 1960s are festooned with the version of Good Morning Starshine by Oliver, which was quite popular on the radio then.
I remember that, too. My sisters had a copy of the original Broadway soundtrack and my parents let them play it. I don't think they quite got the song (don't remember the name) that starts: Sodomy, Fellatio...
Mine is three-five-zero-zero , you really can't miss with any pic IMHO
I love your gifs Martini - but I must admit I was a bit confused by the Gay Pride Pro-Palestinian Professional Protester being chased by a Holstein cow - later on I saw them riding the cows and it all made sense -
/goes back to more closely examine gif
/goes back to take another hit of whatever IP is having ;-)

I also too know the soundtrack by heart. I had my friend Alexa play it yesterday. Just some old, good music. Cool.
But by the end of it, I found there was no getting past the reality and feeling the writers intended. Good Broadway shows really know how to grab you.

Unless I'm really thick, which is certainly possible, JC Superstar omits the resurrection part. Godspell, on the other hand, makes a big deal of it.
I thought it was “The Warriors.” Guess not.
What a fun film THAT is, too!!!
Let me grab some beer bottles.
Come out and plaaaaaay!
Ha. So did I, for a long Ronnasecond.
Good. I'm not the only one who, when the dancing started, thought "I don't remember that part of The Warriors."

Kids will NEVER EVER EVER be on time. Get used to it.
Dammit, now I’m going to have songs from Hair stuck in my head all week.
Man, now PEOPLE is doing Reddit AITA threads.
That said, I saw that story, parents need to get a grip. You were warned. Did you honestly think your kid could just *stop the ship* to give them time to finish their excursion?

¡Feliz cumpleaños a tu mamacita communista, y tu hija Donna Rose!
The CNN story about Aileen Cannon says that " Cannon has dragged out the proceedings in ways that have flummoxed legal scholars" and flummoxed? Really? It's easy. Fuck you is why.
It also says " Cannon was randomly chosen from a broader pool of judges in Florida’s southern district." haha randomly
that pool of judges should be several times bigger but rubio and scott are holding up nominations and durbin won't end blue slip privileges.
it actually was likely random. that untalented hack had a 1 in 3 shot of getting the case.

LULU (aka FLEA BAG) is not a lurcher! She is taking it well.
I bet she’d go poaching with you anyway, just for the sport and support.
Nice!
Is that a Sherman in CommieMom's left hand? Classy!
I think it was a More.
Rebecca, Happy Birthday to your mom! And also to the Divine Ms. DR! And thank you, Martini, for clarifying today’s Tabs - for a moment, I thought, “hey, that’s not Godspell…”

Three generations of terrific women. Happy happy!
