This is the Republican future; government run by the mean drunk at the end of the bar, the drunk uncle who spoils every family gathering, the bloviating know-nothing with the pickup plastered with aggressive, insulting and belligerent stickers.

Republican officeholders will do nothing more than use high crime rates as a wedge issue, a problem "justifying" their longstanding combination of malicious neglect and brutal oppression aimed at the poor. Nothing faux-legitimizes malign authority like the threat of chaos and instability.

Ta, Stephen. Every time I read or hear the words faith-based I want to throw up. Balderdash, indeed.

"less reliance on pharmaceuticals, more reliance on faith-based approaches that restore purpose to people’s lives"

mental illness does not mean lack of religious faith. this is sick

Pray away the disturbed, the traumatized, the hurt, the wounded, AND the gay! Because before you burn in hell, we'll do what we can to get you used to it here. It's the GOP way.

I've got mental health issues, am on disability for those issues and I do NOT want to get institutionalized. I've been for short stays in the local psych ward and.... yeah, no. I'm good, don't need that. I had ECT(shock therapy) in 2010 and itv tried more than I can express here. It's not for everyone, but we need to treat all people in a humane manner.

Also, I've never been violent in my entire life, except for one stay at a prominent psych ward in my area where they withheld my medications for over 36 hours. I threw a chair. At the floor. Because I was not medicated, withdrawing(even SSRI's can have withdraw symptoms) and I was pissed off. Other than that one time in 2007(? I think), I've never hurt anyone or anything, but even if I had, it wouldn't be because I have psych issues. It would be due to me being treated inhumanity, if that makes sense. I shouldn't even explain all this, but it's such a tired trope that all the psych patients are violent and need straight jackets. We need compassion, care and some support from programs, which have been cut to almost extinction in the past 20-ish years!

There used to be at least 3 programs in my county that helped people with psych issues or developmental issues. Now, there is only one, and you either have to be straight out of prison/jail or straight out of the psych ward to qualify. They helped us get food stamps, housing, jobs, etc. It's no longer accessible for most county residents here. It's a shame.

So very sorry that happened to you.

It's okay, honestly. I mean, I really dislike this dude's attitude about people with mental health issues and hope that we don't involuntarily commit people, you know. It's what happens to so many of us with mental health issues serious enough that we can't work full time without losing EVERYTHING. Disability(for me) is $930/mo. I can make about $1400/mo before I trigger my 'Social Security work trial period', which is only 9 months.... which is dumb. I can go for quite a while functioning fairly decently, but when I have bad spells of depression and anxiety, I lose that ability to function in a way that I can work and take proper care of myself. I also have a partner on SSDI and we could never get married, because instead of each of us receiving $930/mo, we'd only get a bit more than $1400/mo. I truly don't understand how a married couple would cost less than 2 not married people.

I'm just glad that since I had shock therapy, my depression has been much better. I've got comorbid diagnoses like anxiety disorder, ADHD, and I've had PTSD and insomnia.

We absolutely need to provide better support for our more vulnerable populations. There aren't enough therapists or doctors who take Medicaid/Medicare and don't get me started on SNAP(food stamp, I currently get $23/mo, yay for Ramen noodles, I guess?).

I don't know what the best answer is for this, but I don't think locking up people with mental health issues is going to make us any 'safer'.

Sorry this is long and dated(my mom took me on a trip and I got Covid for the first time ever on vacation, of course). I'm lucky to have her and I do cherish her as I lost my only sibling to her struggles with mental health 2 years ago and my Dad passed in 2016.

Hope you had a fantastic Halloween 🎃 👻 and a Happy November to you! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

“We know from the 1990s how to stop violent crime.” - Now, now. I know Ramasmarmy is a colossal dick who is the living embodiment of what would happen if one of those pop-up ads with the tiny x square in the corner you can never quite reach gained sentience but I have to say I’m really impressed (and surprised!) here with his recognition of the efficacy of Clinton’s assault weapons ban … oh wait … 😒

The most cost effective solution to crime is to house the homeless.

they are never, and have never been, interested in proven remedies to anything. it is all just PR, marketing, a series of frauds, According to them, crime is ALWAYS rising, and the facts be damned. You don't look tough when you are kind (unless you are Dr. Who, and NOBODY could resemble him less than a RWNJ), or use peaceful methods, and nobody is (rhetorically) tougher than our wannabe fuhrers.

Since when have Repubs bothered to follow rules (about 3 decades, I'd say)? Rules are for other people--the ones who don't get to make the rules.

we also had an assault weapon ban in the 90s

Guess he forgot that bit

So the giant forehead has spoken, Pray Cray Cray Away. Isn't this dude a Hindu? Who are we praying to Shiva? So he's selling this load of Faith based shit to Bible humpers because he doesn't believe or practice their Faith? Wait, what?

Dude. My disabled sister is the most religious person on the planet. She hears Jesus in the radio. She believes that her music is annointing the (sound proof) room in her group home. She has most of the Bible and a concordance memorized. In an earlier century, she would not be in a mental institution, she'd have been living cloistered in a nunnery.

You know what keeps her from going fully off the deep end? Strong psychiatric medications.

Speaking of dirty dealing, in the early 2000's SmithGlaxoKline was made aware of a chemical compound that increased the effectiveness of a proposed vaccine for tuberculosis, the worst infection in the world. So GSK started working with it. However, it found this adjuvant (a tree bark) was also helpful in increasing the effectiveness of what became Shingrex and the latest FDA approved RSV vaccine (something like Abrystol). So GSK stopped working on the TB vaccine (because mostly poor people get that) and finished up Shingrex and RSV which a lot of richer people get. It did not give up its rights to the tree bark, though, so no one else could further refine the TB vaccine.

It's a messy story, but 20 years later the Bill Gates Foundation has started pouring cash into this, and there may be a newly formulated vaccine for TB next year. Millions of people will die before then. I read this story by ProPublica in the doctor's office waiting for the doctor. I was there because I'm a paid participant in the RSV study.

Fuck you, Vivek. You wanna kill birthright citizenship after benefitting from it yourself. And you want to tell people with severe mental illness “you don’t need those pills—all you need is to pray!”

Without the pills I would be dead right now.

Whether it moved the mythical "crime rate" or not Reagan caused a lot of grief to a lot of Severely Mentally Ill People and "tossing them onto the street" rather than fix the problesms with many of those "mental asylums" was an evil deed that SHOULD be reversed. Not that that's Rummysahib's message, but the point should be made.
