It’s amazing how far the right is reshaping our culture in nearly every way. It’s almost as if they had a 900 page manifesto ready to implement change starting this year. Like “Proposition Year One,” or “Design to Destroy Democracy in Anno Domini MMXXV.”
The sweeping assault on journalism, education, financial markets, immigration and due process are the kind of fascist nightmare the right have been claiming liberals have planned for decades. The changes are horrifying, and obviously reek of a government run amok with a fool for a figurehead puppet whose only nourishment is flattery and cheeseburgers. Oh, and women, many of whom are on the younger side.
The plan had support not really for its merits, as Republicans and Trump himself pretended they never heard of Project 2025, or didn’t like it, or had no plans to implement it. They knew voters with the power to swing the election would never embrace such authoritarianism. But voters were duped in a highly successful and relentless culture war waged over the internet. They made “woke” a dangerous, dirty word that no decent person unfamiliar with what woke really meant would want to be labeled. And Dems have been caught flatfooted, unable to effectively tie “woke” with empathy, kindness, tolerance and being informed of social, cultural and global issues. They didn’t even need meaningful boogiemen, just choose one person who stands out from the crowd, someone like Dylan Mulvaney for example, and make outrageous, sweeping claims about liberals that rile people up.
There must be an immensely powerful human urge to be vicious and angry, because that emotion has shaped our current climate in America. Harris offered a vision of hope, prosperity, freedom for all and kindness, and it failed to inspire enough people. I’m no political scientist, but that fact, and the choosing of Trump a second time despite his mind boggling corruption and flaws, must be baffling the brightest minds in the world. It’s disinformation, in my opinion, that will be our undoing. The utterly limitless reach and potential of the internet may prove to be the catalyst for America losing its way.
Lots of comments about how Bezos ruined WaPo, and he absolutely did, but not right away. When Bezos bought the paper in 2013, Marty Baron was the executive editor and remained so until February 2021, right after Biden’s inauguration. For me, that was the noticeable beginning of WaPo’s decline, first under Sally Buzbee and then more rapidly under Will Lewis, that wanker.
Under Baron’s leadership, WaPo actually did a pretty good job of accurate reporting on the 1st reign of the Mad King. Think of David Farenthold’s investigative reporting on that fucking guy’s various “charity” shenanigans. Plus, the 1st reign had a LOT of leakers who were willing to share all the hot gossip.
After Baron left, all we got were a bunch of negative stories about Biden. Remember all the media pearl clutching about how Biden wouldn’t do a press conference? And then he did, and he was actually good, but that wasn’t enough for them. They previously had more “access” directly to that fucking guy, who took questions and spouted inane word salads, often while standing next to a roaring helicopter (“chopper talk”). They hounded Biden about his age until he dropped out, and were somehow even worse towards Kamala Harris. She didn’t do a sit-down interview right away. She (allegedly) didn’t have a policy platform (except that she did, which I knew from watching a few of her rallies, which presumably the reporters also had access to?). Even when she posted detailed policy proposals on her campaign website, they just ignored it. Then, of course, there was Bezos killing the endorsement of Harris, which my hero Marty Baron called “cowardice, with democracy as its casualty.”
My point is that Marty Baron apparently had the juice to keep Bezos from interfering with WaPo’s reporting, but it went to shit when Baron left in February 2021. And now Bezos has (accurately) figured out that the Mad King is a petty, vindictive little tyrant, and decided to capitulate like so many others, because that is what is best for Bezos and his ridiculous wealth. Tarriffs are going to hurt Amazon bigly, not to mention all the government contracts.
Kessler was always a shit, but the piece he did on the 10 yo rape victim was just particularly egregious. And the reason “especially women” were pissed is because we are the only ones directly affected by the obscene abortion restrictions after the corrupt Republican appointees on SCOTUS overturned Roe v Wade. Calling it “an abortion story too good to be true” earns a permanent fuck aaaaaaaaaaaallllllll the way off. For real fact-checking, please see CNN’s Daniel Dale’s work during the Mad King’s first reign.
But yeah, WaPo is utter shite now. They actually posted an oped from MAGA POS Marc Thiessen yesterday with the headline “Hunger in Gaza has many authors, but Israel isn’t one of them.” What in the actual everloving fuck?!
Sorry for the dissertation. This is why I now read The Guardian for my U.S. political news.
I had an interaction with Kessler, when I emailed him saying the “Pinocchios” scale was juvenile, and minimized the harm caused by big-league lies. He got all huffy.
WaPo, on top of being a sickenly, relentlessly cheerful booster section for the Turd Reich has of late apparently lost its copy editor, making already-unreadable slop so rife with syntax, spelling, grammar and other errors (dropping entire words, forex) that getting through many articles now requires a degree in what you thought they might've meant to say, which is nothing truthful or all that helpful anyhow (and the ads are all Outbrain-style now, if you recall what those are like). An absolute abomination compared to the free and truthful press they once were.
I was born in the 1970s and I inherited many vinyl LPs and singles from my parents and uncles. My uncle, Cam, had the single “Space Oddity” with “The Man Who Sold the World” on the B side. I loved both songs, still do. But I was obsessed with “The Man…”. I still have that single, complete with my uncle’s name written on it, hanging on the wall of my mancave. Great record.
Lewis: “What should The Post do to appeal more to Fox News viewers?”
Lie.
Lewis: Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that? Meeting adjourned!
Jesus, these people. What is so fucking important about appealing to the geezers who fall asleep watching Hannity? Are they some Holy Grail demo that advertisers crave?
Maybe they should ask themselves why no one under 40 has ever held a physical newspaper in their hands. That might help their bottom line more.
I would say anyone under 30 because my kid is 34 and used to read the daily paper occasionally and every Sunday when she lived with me until age 15 (2006).
Imagine the MAGA Page Six lineup: Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Jeanine Pirro, the clerk in KY who wouldn't give out same-sex marriage licenses, and every Mar-a-Lago face in the country...
These assholes smugly say that if Black men are locked up disproportionately, it's because they commit a lot of crimes.
But just try suggesting that if Republicans keep getting called out by fact-checkers much more often than Democrats, it's because they tell a lot of lies.

There goes Glenn, they said around the water cooler.
A right little stickler.

I never thought the leopards would eat MY face!!!!
Glen would award that three pinnocios, because it was a panther, not a leopard.

I've got 30 minutes; who wants a fight?
The Man Who Sold the World - Bowie's best record?
Undercard, yeah, but come on,
I was born in the 1970s and I inherited many vinyl LPs and singles from my parents and uncles.
Glenn Kessler is a Republican hack who wrapped himself in the mantle of journalistic integrity.
He can eat my shorts.
Oh, poor Glenn. We're terribly sorry.
Seems to me this asshole fit right in with the new direction at the post.
Lewis: “What should The Post do to appeal more to Fox News viewers?”

It is not what is important. They are, successfully, turning all media into a right wing propaganda machine.
If papers fail, so be it
I would say anyone under 30 because my kid is 34 and used to read the daily paper occasionally and every Sunday when she lived with me until age 15 (2006).
Call it the New York Post.
Or the McPaper, USA Today.
"How can 'wealth inequality' be a thing when one side doesn't even have wealth?"
Seriously, that was the fuckface's argument?
So if whites can vote and Blacks can't, that's not "voting inequality," because Blacks don't have a vote for the whites' vote to be unequal to ...
It’s just math!
Put a Page 6 girl who looks like Sydney Sweeny on every page!
You're Welcome....
Imagine the MAGA Page Six lineup: Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Jeanine Pirro, the clerk in KY who wouldn't give out same-sex marriage licenses, and every Mar-a-Lago face in the country...
Megan the Kelly, Lara Trump, That Greek Ambassador woman...
Now imagine me puking.
They should remake the paper in the image of “World Weekly News.” At least then they’d have some journalistic integrity.
Bat Boy!
These assholes smugly say that if Black men are locked up disproportionately, it's because they commit a lot of crimes.
But just try suggesting that if Republicans keep getting called out by fact-checkers much more often than Democrats, it's because they tell a lot of lies.
*cough* Over Policed *cough*....
If you want to see a lot of crimes and no lockup, look to Ken Fucking Paxton. He alone could disprove the assholes’ point.
Imaging trying to attract more right-wing readers when everyone knows MAGA doesn 't read.
TBF, they do read the chyron at the bottom of their NewsMax report. That’s the level of detail they are comfortable with.
