Not saying this as a better method but seems like if they wanted attention and concessions a hostage situation is how that works (see also Gaza.)

Regarding civil war, I am undecided about whether me and all the urban liberals having a firearm at home is more likely to result in political violence, or more likely to 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 political violence. Leaning towards the latter at the current time.
Not to be THAT guy, but I believe you mean the SR-25, which is just like its AR cousin, but in the deadlier 7.62 caliber. If one jammed, I'm sure it's because they used some corrosive surplus Eastern Bloc ammo. But, as others have pointed out, the graffiti (shades of Jeffrey MacDonald's "attackers"!) and alleged demographics of the "suspects" sure make it suspicious.
