What good news and a fabulous post.

Most people call "Piston-Engined" ICEs - internal combustion engines. Just fyi.

Me two. During one of our last snowstorms some guy hit my new EV and my loaner is gas powered. I have to get gas again?! Ugh.

Hp's capable of functioning at low temps are available.

"Today's cold climate heat pumps are designed to be efficient in temperatures as low as -30°C . In fact, a study by the Yukon's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources found some systems were capable of 200% efficiency at -18°C."

Thank you, that's super helpful!

The Mitsubishi H2I heatpumps we put in last summer are rated to -15F, and they keep working below that at reduced output.

I still have a tab open with the ongoing knife throwing that continues in the House right now. I remain absolutely entranced by the madness.

Enrico Fermi built the world's first nuclear reactor on the campus of the University of Chicago, right in the middle of the city!

So fun to watch them "own" each other!

We've had a heat pump for a little over a year. Much more efficient than the Eisenhower-era furnace we had before, but that's a pretty low bar. We're in Oakland CA, which is a pretty temperate climate, almost never below freezing and almost never above 90F, so it works just great for us.

Thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it!

Almost all the Passive House projects in the NE are using Mitsubishi Mr. Slims, last I looked. People rave. At some point all heat pumps essentially turn into resistance heating, when there's too little energy to squeeze out of the air. Even so, they are 100% efficient (at worst) at turning electricity into heat.
