It's true. Religion is cratering planet-wide. The only growth is in births (conversions NOT involving swords are just ineffective) and it's happening with every religion. The things that are changing it are basically the internet and modern life. And most faiths are just refusing to adapt to a changing world. Historically, religions that fail to adapt, are left behind. So, they're trying to change the world to make it more like what their faith says it should be.

They only believed in democracy because they were sure that they could convince enough people to willingly choose theocracy. But that hasn't worked, their mask has slipped or fallen off too many times. So now they've thrown away the carrot and are reaching for the stick.

The decline of religion is one of the few things that still gives me hope about the world.

thephantomcheese's avatar

Well, that's what happens when you keep telling people Jesus will solve all their problems and He... doesn't

agony's avatar

Historically, they've mostly gone with the stick. It's the last couple hundred years that are the aberration. Once people get a taste of saying "I really don't care for any, thank you", though, it's hard to put that genie back in the bottle.

"...he could get his marching orders in person from the giant tangelo that roams the grounds..."

My second LOL of the morning

"even though a blind naked mole rat could tell them it’s a drag on the GOP’s electoral prospects..."

Shut that mole rat up.

Also, above description gave me my first LOL of the morning.

Gareth the Dung Shoveler's avatar

Naked mole-rats reproduce like insects. There's a queen and a few breeding males. The rest of them are sterile workers. They are really amazing animals.

skinnercitycyclist's avatar

Amazing I guess, but it's a sound analogy for the GOP.

Johnson preached to his fellow misfits the same old, sad, tired harangue about America going to hell because we are slipping away from his religion. Different decade, same bologna. As if churchy folks enjoy any real moral superiority anyway. It’s so expected from the far right jesusy wingers that we ignore that the establishment clause of the Constitution should prevent religious sermons during government business, and ideally prevent Mike Johnson in general. And as soon as you willingly call upon a known adulterer, conman, thug and serial abuser and take gleeful photos with him, you’ve shown yourself and your hypocrisy. Stop wasting our time. If there is a god, she’s disgusted by Donald Trump and might have hard questions for him, and those who embrace him.

GoldStar's avatar

If I’m understanding correctly -

Johnson railed against the decline in America’s moral values and then went to visit trump, who had just been fined $80-odd million for defaming his rape victim. This was before the $380 million fine he got for running a corrupt business for decades.

Is it me?

DemoCat's avatar

That’s correct. Either Mike believes God wants Mike to save Donald, or Mike has no sincere beliefs and is full of shit. It’s the second one.

Mx.le Maerin's Luxury Comedy's avatar

It may well be the second, but I'd bet he's talked himself into believing it's the first.

My disabled sister is a Christian nutjob. I love her despite this. But she's also certified Grade A insane, has been since she was 17, and has been in and out of mental hospitals her entire life. Her current psychiatrist is a Liberty university type, so they get along famously. I'm her representative payee and medical power of attorney, so I sit in her psych appointments sometimes. My sister has definitely opened up to the psych and went on one of her very very very impressive and Biblically accurate speeches. The psych is actually good at her job, though, so she listened, nodded a lot, and took a lot of notes. I am sure some of those notes included, "true believer" and "wow... uh... okay" in nicer psychology terms.

kckitty's avatar

You might be in the wrong thread.

Anzu's avatar

No? The discussion is regarding Christian nutjobs. They're all pretty bizarre, it's just the ones that can hold down a job get called True Believers (tm) and turn into Speaker of the House and the ones that can't fake it and/or have other disabilities that make it impossible to mask in society end up in group homes on very strong medication because they've lost the ability to tell fantasy from reality.

The majority of the modern GOP grifters are actually fakers who think everyone else is in on the con job and they get shocked when one of the True Believers (tm) actually makes it into a position of real power.

People need to wake up about Johnson's true motive and vision of the future.

IMHO he believes God made him Speaker to enable the end-times prophecies of Armageddon and thus his rapture.

Denying the Ukrainian aid package vote is part of that plan; the current chaos in the Middle East confirms to him the inerrancy of the Book of Revelations, and it's why he embraces Trump as the AntiChrist. It's all a design to enable the second coming, so the threat of WWIII does not phase him.

I was raised Southern Baptist, so I know how these extremist religious nutjobs think.

thephantomcheese's avatar

I was, too- what "We Stand With Israel" really means is "We'll use the Israelis to force Jeebus to return sooner than He planned, and if they burn in hell for not being Christians, so what?"

Chuck Dickens's avatar

He definitely believes that stuff, and he is also definitely corrupt and being directed by The new Soviet Union fanboys.

Revenant's avatar

faze, s'il vous plait, phase is something else entirely.

Revenant's avatar

I never doubted it, but not everyone does so leaving it unchallenged might confirm someone else in folly. The things that to me seem basic common knowledge but prove not to be is a constant source of unpleasant wonder.

The conflict between the True Believer Republicans and the "Just because we sell this BS to the rubes doesn't mean we believe it ourselves" Republicans is always interesting

LuluBean12 StarGeezer's avatar

I think is is dangerous not interesting so much.

I want to know where exactly in the Bible does it say that an omnipotent God requires help to organize and speed up End Times? None of these guys were even temporarily raptured during the big expected even of several years back (2011?)

If they are not good enough to have been sucked up back then why should anyone work with them.

bluePNWcats's avatar

If by interesting, you mean super annoying and obvious to the rest of the world, then yes it is extremely interesting.

Secret Agent Super Dragon's avatar

It always amazes me when some Republican politicians are very clear that all this GUNS JESUS AMERICA FREEDOM talk is just to rile up the masses and they don’t care

bluePNWcats's avatar

At this point, they're all but trumpeting it from the rooftops, and the idiots just smile and nod.

Colbert Thorenson's avatar

The devil is in the details whereas god is in Mike Johnson's AR-15 lapel pin.

Craig Nixon's avatar

But the angels are among us...they just all got caught up in Mike's porn-copping app.

bluePNWcats's avatar

And in his wallet. Don't forget that God. He takes precedence over all others...

Speaker Covenant Eyes' "style," as called for in the original article, seems to just be hypocritical, creepy pantysniffing religious fascist. That's really not a problem if you have a party that's not there to govern but to destroy the functioning of the federal government.

Chuck Dickens's avatar

Well they do tend to kill large groups of people.

Steven McCrary's avatar

Jeez, aren’t they all in a pickle…of their own making.

wavicles's avatar

pickles are not mentioned in the Bible! No pickle!

Well, that's what happens when you can't cut the mustard.

They'd better hurry and ketchup

Wrong little Mikey, when people start thinking for themselves and stop going to church they just start spouting Qanon bullshit because they were already delusional.

Occasionally they read the bibble and realize that God DGAF about anything but subservience and praise (remind you of anyone, hnnngh?) and nope out and start thinking for themselves, but not often enough.

But hey! You do you and keep up with the losing message, I'm sure God will give you a sign when the elections come round.

thephantomcheese's avatar

I was raised Baptist and they make it explicitly clear humans exist for the sole purpose of praising God, no matter what horrible things He lets happen to you...
