Pretty quiet at the bar. Ask questions about this fairly over the top drink here.

Zap's avatar

Organic coconut oil is available in an already liquid state. It’s pricey but I use it frequently. Can I use that in this wash?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

No reason not to. Go for it.

Matthew Hooper's avatar

TOO quiet. A dozen and a half senior citizens rolled in from a sister club and drank like fish. Including some really, really old cocktails. I had to make a Taqueray Prespetarian.

Frank Talk, Action Pundit!'s avatar

lol Well, at least that's kinda cool.

Lucy Bea's avatar

Hoop, I asked you recently if you could recommend a good coconut rum and you replied with Planteray Cut & Dried. Would that work in this drink if one is too lazy for the fat- washing process? Also, too, does the fat washing have an effect on the mouthfeel of the booze in question?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

My only reservation about using Cut & Dried is that the cocktail will be a bit browner and less pretty. Otherwise, go for it. Fat washing does add some body to a cocktail; it's impossible to get 100% of the oil out of the booze (we get very very close, though).

John Wiederhirn's avatar

Any suggestions as substitute bitters for those of us allergic to walnuts?

John Wiederhirn's avatar

What about something like Miracle Mile Pecan Bitters or even El Guapo Chicory Pecan Bitters? Not entirely sure the Chicory/coffee notes of the El Guapo would "fit", but coffee does work fine with both banana and orange. Can't say I've actually tried the Miracle Mile Pecan Bitters, so hoping maybe you have, Hooper? Any other suggestions welcome as well as opinions about the above for this drink?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

I have never heard of those bitters and would heartily endorse trying them!

John Wiederhirn's avatar

Okay, any suggestions from your side for those allergic to walnuts?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

Orange bitters are more or less my default in these situations, and they would work well here. You could also skip the bitters entirely; they aren't part of a standard Negroni recipe.

JustDontSayDittos's avatar

I don't have that allergy, but I would be interested in the answer. Maybe his Tiki Bitter recipe?

John Wiederhirn's avatar

The snag is that he appears to be using the Black Walnut Bitters as much for the nut taste as for the bitters aspect. I'm so used to substituting pecans normally, doing it here (Pecan Bitters) seemed like a natural choice -- but then thinking about it, the one I've tried (El Guapo) tended to be a bit... complex, and not as "nut-forward" (stop giggling, you sickos!) as he might want here.

marydn's avatar

I DON'T LIKE BANANAS! Sorry for shouting but sometimes you want to make sure that you are heard. I'll go stand in the corner now.

Matthew Hooper's avatar

Not every cocktail is for everyone. I will say that I'm not a fan of the texture of bananas, but the flavor does play nice here without hitting some of the bitter or cloying aspects of banana flavor.

marydn's avatar

I know, you're right but I just shuddered when I realized it was a banana and not a marshmallow. I shuddered at the idea of a marshmallow, too but I like marshmallows in other things. Thank you for listening as a good bartender should.

tehbaddr's avatar

Can I make this with Popov and some Mr Boston's Curacao?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

Why not just wait till the end of my shift and do bar mat shots?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

The bar shots need some time to... mature.

John Wiederhirn's avatar

Ooh, Mr. Top Shelf! Too hoity-toity for Everclear diluted with tap water and Torani Orange, eh? (aka "Screwhammer" / "Thundershart Orange").

tehbaddr's avatar

"Thundershart Orange" is the code name they use for Chump when he needs some hygiene attention.

JustDontSayDittos's avatar

maybe you should change your nym to 'tehbadbartender'

Craig Nixon's avatar

Oof. I feel hung over just reading that.

pskbh's avatar

BoB the TacoɔɒT, Tumbrel Pilot's avatar

How should one go about bruléeing banana slices?

Shocktreatment's avatar

I chastise the help. Being as condescending as possible helps

"Well, 𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘯, do you expect these bananas to brulée 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴?"

Matthew Hooper's avatar

Sprinkle some brown sugar onto a small plate. Tap a small banana slice onto the brown sugar, letting the sugar stick to the slice. Run a kitchen torch over the sugar until it caramelizes and bubbles.

Notorious J.I.M.'s avatar

Small propane torch? Check.

tehbaddr's avatar

Just throw some banana runts in there.

Thixotropickle's avatar

One way you might solve the coconut oil becoming solid issue is to substitute regular coconut oil with MCT coconut oil which has a much lower freezing point.

TootsStansbury 🇺🇦's avatar

It looks interesting but is it banana forward?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

It's sweet, but the banana harmonizes with the rest of the flavors. You almost have to be told it's there.

JustDontSayDittos's avatar

I love it when we talk dirty!

Rocket Cat's avatar

Looks fantastic, as ever

helenasgarden's avatar

I would scarf that down in no time. And then another and then another. Yum. Give me a beach and I'm in paradise.

That garnish is graceful and elegant. A work of art.

I'm not really familiar with bitters. Would walnut bitters taste like walnuts?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

A little, but it's too subtle to notice as a distinct flavor.

The Blessed Reverend's avatar

are you sure it is not The Homunculus?

helenasgarden's avatar

Ugh. LOL Not in my little world.

The Covfefes ASAP!'s avatar

Stanta Knows's avatar

Regarding the garnishes:

Beautiful orange peel.

Got a process for the bruleed banana? It looked like a toasted marshmallow and that didn't make sense. Just a quick torching? Does it need some sugar?

Matthew Hooper's avatar

Sprinkle some brown sugar onto a small plate. Tap a small banana slice onto the brown sugar, letting the sugar stick to the slice. Run a kitchen torch over the sugar until it caramelizes and bubbles. (Yes, copied and pasted, I'll get around to editing the recipe with proper instructions eventually. Apologies.)

Goonemeritus's avatar

I will be going with the marshmallow, it's the only ingredient I have in the butlers pantry.

I'm going to post something here that I got off the FB wall of one of my oldest friends. We were never great friends, but were friends the way it is done in the suburbs -- we grew up in houses across the street from each other, went to school together, and played together in our group (So many Boomers! We were everywhere!).

Our paths in lives differed appreciably. She married her high school sweetheart. They are still married and had a bunch of kids, and now have a bunch of grandkids, too. Photographic and anecdotal evidence shows a great, happy family.

As far as I know, her education ended at high school. I think that has made a difference to her outlook and her critical capabilities.

Her post was one of those "If you agree, put your name at the bottom after all the other names of people who agree, and copy it to your wall" posts. I don't agree, as you will see, and you will be able to figure out why when you read her post. I don't believe I can engage in any fruitful discussion with her on the issues raised and positions taken, so I'm not even going to try. This does sadden me somewhat.

I share her post here to cast some light on what a reasonably decent, regular person who happens to be a Trump supporter believes. While the words she posted are not hers, she supports them and repeats them unquestioningly. I don't know how such persons will ever be reached or persuaded on the issue of Donald John Trump. Their ignorance and wishful thinking are astounding. (There were a lot of names listed at the bottom of the post.)

"GONNA VENT HERE. I’ve got to be honest. ..I am a President Trump supporter and I give credit where I believe credit is due! President Trump has done some great things for this country and he has shown us, the American people that we are still in control of this country, and, if we come together we can accomplish any goals we set our focus on! I have lived through John F Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama. In my lifetime have I never seen or heard of a President being scrutinized over every word he speaks, humiliated by the public to the point of wanting to hurt someone, slandered, ridiculed, insulted, and lied to. I have never heard their wives or children threatened, insulted, and humiliated.

I am truly ashamed of the people of this country. I am ashamed of the ruthless, hating, cruel Trump haters who have no morals, and news reporters who feel they have the right to purposely lie and do the things they are doing. Every other President after they were elected and took the oath of office, was left alone. They weren’t on the news 24/7 being dissected by every word out of their mouth, ALWAYS BEING PRESSURED to do this, or that, and never being given the support to do the important work that needs to be done. ENOUGH is ENOUGH! LEAVE THE MAN ALONE AND LET HIM DO HIS JOB, FOR GOD’S SAKE! "

freakishlystrong's avatar

He lives to be on teevee everyday. Fuck, I wish we could leave him alone, he never shuts the fuck up. Also, every D POTUS has had their wives, kids insulted slandered and threatened. Your friend needs to pull her head out of her ass and step away from right wing media.

M-X's avatar

You can mute her from your feed, without unfriending her, if you want to keep her as a contact. I won't let anyone like that near me, right or wrong.

Tetman Callis's avatar

No, I won't do that. I will not turn my back on her. I will not argue with her, I will not contribute to or support her causes, but we share a history. We were never great friends, but we ran together in the same tight-knit little group for a while. If she ever needed help from me and I could provide it, I would. Would that I could help her with her Trump Derangement Syndrome, but I don't believe I can.

M-X's avatar

I understand.

I have people like that in my history, and it appears there's absolutely nothing the rest of us "uninfected" can do.

Maybe I have less tolerance for being exposed to this sickness, since I witness them wishing and acting to harm my only child. And all the other bigotry, the damage they wish on so many, without cause.

Most people know where I stand, from childhood; it's how I've always been. There are no illusions that I'll ever accept the loathing they spew.

And there are many sources of help they can access if they ever question their situation, so I don't have the emotional or mental energy to provide it.

I am obligated to protect my mental health, not least so I can protect and support my vulnerable child.

My life work was with support and treatment of people with acute mental illness and addiction (those seeking treatment), and I do that well.

I can apparently do nothing for these people, and I have tried.

EyeQueue's avatar

All of this. I'm done with excuses for them. They represent a clear and present threat to this country because of their beliefs and how they vote.

EyeQueue's avatar

Word. Me, either.

I don't know the answer but as long as they feel they are welcome anywhere they go with this horseshit they won't stop.

M-X's avatar

Nope, they won't. Not mild and gentle reasoning (HA) nor all the way to having to put a hand up inches between our faces when being shouted at, not having provoked any of that pollution, has done a thing to improve the situation (although the publicly refusing, loudly, to let them intimidate me or prevent my protecting others more vulnerable, has really startled them, and apparently gave onlookers on those occasions some courage as well.)

And of course, usually, the pig enjoys it, so I don't often give him the satisfaction. Only when unavoidable.

Mysterysurf's avatar

Charge up the flamethrower.

Mysterysurf's avatar

Honestly, under the circumstances of your relationship as you describe it, I would likely just roll my eyes and keep scrolling on past it. If they persisted in posting similar stuff, though, a reckoning would come one way or another.

JCfromNC's avatar

I had to unfollow my best bud from middle/high school on FB because he went full MAGA during the first maladministration. I couldn't handle the stupid shit I'd see him post and of course anything I said to refute any of it was just "fake news."

Man, I'm glad I didn't end up marrying his sister.

JCfromNC's avatar

Oh yeah -- PAB's the only president to ever have every word and action dissected on the evening news, fer shure. <rolls eyes>

EyeQueue's avatar

As if there isn't reason. He is a completely indecent man and if people can't see that that mean they themselves are indecent or just too fucking stupid to be allowed.

They have destroyed this country and their votes and beliefs are leading to people being killed.

But, sure. Let's keep treating them nicely.

Tetman Callis's avatar

She's not indecent. She's not stupid. She's misinformed, sadly and badly so.

They have not destroyed this country. This country is not destroyed. It is in peril, but whenever in the last hundred years or more has it not been.

To avoid engaging in pointless debate with someone is not the same as treating them nicely.

EyeQueue's avatar

I respectfully have to disagree with the "they have not destroyed the country."

They have shredded the social contract so badly it may never be repaired again. People are dying because of their vote and their "misinformed" status. That, in my book, constitutes destroying the country.

Tetman Callis's avatar

That was one of the points at which I realized the great gap separating my friend, and those she agrees with, from me and what I know and believe. To be President is to be under constant scrutiny. For a person not to know that demonstrates that that person is not paying attention.

JCfromNC's avatar

I mean, jeebus, even if she watches nothing but FOX and OANN 24/7, she would have seen with HER OWN DAMN EYES how they constantly criticized every little thing Clinton/Obama/Biden did while in office. But I guess she just edited all that shit right out of her brain because PAB must be seen as simultaneously the strongest leader and the biggest victim at all times.
