I don't drink and Mom's current med regimen means only 2-3 drinks a week. Dad's been experimenting with a few non-alcoholic versions of things for her tho, he's decent at drink mixing. We're going to go to the zoo instead.

We're doing lunch for Grandma on Sunday tho.

Hey Hooper you have any ideas for a Movie Night themed drink? Something fun, easy and helps take your mind off things. Thanks! We are watching Fargo next week if that helps.

Fargo?

I'd suggest some sort of Old Fashioned. For the wood chips (chipper) of course.

I was actually just thinking a general Movie Night themed drink, something that works for all movie nights, not a MOVIE themed drink. One drink to satisfy all Movie Nights.

Ziggy and Hooper both: There's that scene where Marge is interviewing a couple of Midwestern maybe-hooker barflies about the suspects, who they partied with in a local bar. WHATEVER THEY WOULD DRINK. 😄 Probably some peppermint schnapps abomination.

It could be called the "You Betcha." Or, the "Kinda Funny Lookin'."

Or the Double-Head “Ya.”

But now that I think about it, there are TONS of moments in that movie that would lend themselves to great drink names. The "Woodchipper," a variation on the Bloody Mary. Or the "Feliciano," which could be based on cheap Champagne. Or the "Fleeing the Scene," which would probably entail grain alcohol and desperation. There has to be a whole damn menu.

There was a period in the early aughts where the hometown drink of choice was - and I kid you not - a Rooty Dew, i.e. root beer schnapps & Mt Dew.

OR - and I don't remember if it had a name - a shot of peach schnapps blended with whipped cream.

And thus we see why the youth abandon farm country for life in the cittay.

For Zootopia, I would suggest a layered Hunch Punch. It fits the mood of happy co-existing chaos while acknowledging the individual components.

Layering this shit is easy, even in individual glasses. Hooper has told us how to do it dozens of times.

For Fargo: There's a woman on Facebook who goes by That Midwestern Mom, and she once made a cocktail involved whipped cream vodka, cranberries, and...jello? I think? Anyway, she's the most hilariously stereotypical Minnesotan and I cannot recommend her videos enough. (In reality, her name is Amber and she is a classically-trained operatic soprano.)

For Zootopia: Absinthe.

I have a question about a different drink, if that's okay. Years ago, I had a delicious Blackberry Bramble at the Milk & Honey bar in NYC, now closed (known for being pitch dark inside and no signage outside). I've tried several recipes since then, but none taste as good as that one. Do you have a good recipe?

First Bramble I ever had was at the Shelbourne in Dublin. It was Easter week and the weather was gorgeous!

Everybody was drinking these lovely cocktails on this lovely spring day. We were sitting at the bar and ask the bartender, "what is that you're making"? He replied, this is A Bramble, you HAVE to drink these on the first days of spring.

So we did, and... yep!!

Some thoughts on the Indo - Pak brouhaha.

1. Pakistan's Chinese made weapons seem to work.

b. India didn't think they would and for the first time in a long time they are looking at parity in the air rather than domination. I'm curious if any neutral source knows how many aircraft and drones were shot down.

iii. This will run and run. And run some more. The suspension of the water treaty in the Punjab will be the next flashpoint.

(D). It amuses me no end that the Pakistani Army sends out its political glove puppets to talk to the media while India sends out women officers, one of whom is a Muslim.

FIVE. Fuck Mountbatten with a big fucky thing, if he had allowed the Radcliffe Commission to follow his guidelines then Kashmir would have gone to Pakistan and an awful lot of this would have been avoided.

Yesterday the garden store, aka greenhouse, was overrun by little old ladies buying plants before the rush of Mother's Day. We were there relatively early, and the staff were watering plants, so there were big thick hoses across the aisles in many locations. On two occasions, I bent down to lift the front wheels of some little old lady's cart to help her roll over the hoses. The second time I did it, I tweaked my back, just a little, nothing serious, but enough to complain about.

Mr. cc: Why'd you even do it?

Me: I just wanted to help that little old lady.

Mr. cc: You're a little old lady too now. You know that, right?

Me: Shit. I forgot.

Yeah, just a couple of years ago I kept thinking there were a lot of old people around with walkers and using oxygen. Now with my chemo screwing up my lungs I may soon be one of them. Walking up the stairs slowly to the bedroom sometimes drops my O2 level to 85 and leaves me gasping for breath. So it looks like I am finally an old. And soon to be hooked up to oxygen, along with a chemo pump running into my chest portal for two days every two weeks.

I may eventually need to add a feeding tube if my stomach starts acting up again due to esophageal cancer, with a weight loss of 25 pounds between January 2024 and June 2024. That has since stabilized though. Oh, and neuropathy in my feet and fingers from the chemo makes my balance off, my gait shuffling, and a tendency to drop things and causing problems with buttons. For the good news last summer I didn't think I would make it to Halloween but I'm still around and bitching. I even managed to spend three hours this week babysitting with my great grand daughter, the prettiest baby on the East Coast.

This Casey Means surgeon general appointment dealio has really solidified for me one of the things that seems so tragic about some of the terrible people the Trump administration has appointed. Some or maybe even many seem to have some genuine grasp of actual problems that need to be addressed - chronic health issues for all the MAHA crowd, for instance. But there are more - the problems attendant with people fleeing poverty and repressive regimes; trade whose foundation is in impoverishment or even slave labor; America's endless enthusiasm for military adventures; the demographic time bomb. Those are all things I agree with them on. But their putative *solutions* for these - snake oil, prison camps, incoherent tariffs, gutting alliances; forced birth - are essentially those cartoon tropes where the protagonist facing a problem comes up with a patently ludicrous scheme that ultimately makes the problem so much worse.

Odd conspiracy theory note: There is a document that claims to be a very old prophecy of every Pope who would serve between its writing and the end of the world. It is, of course, a hoax, but that hasn't stopped people from believing in it or TV producers from making shows about it.

With Pope Leo now in office, we have exceeded the number of popes that 'prophecy' predicted. So it will be quite interesting to see how those who believe it will twist themselves now.
