I don't drink and Mom's current med regimen means only 2-3 drinks a week. Dad's been experimenting with a few non-alcoholic versions of things for her tho, he's decent at drink mixing. We're going to go to the zoo instead.
Hooper, I'm sure you're proud of your cousin's group, but do you even know the plot of Airport '77? My first, immediate thought was "a drowned cocktail?" Inauspicious. 😄
The cute little wings garnish reminds me of my dear old Dad, may he RIP. I had him buried with his so he could fly to his heart’s content in the afterlife.
Hey Hooper you have any ideas for a Movie Night themed drink? Something fun, easy and helps take your mind off things. Thanks! We are watching Fargo next week if that helps.
I was actually just thinking a general Movie Night themed drink, something that works for all movie nights, not a MOVIE themed drink. One drink to satisfy all Movie Nights.
Hmm. My first impulse is a martini, because martinis are very Hollywood to me. But a laid back martini, not a hoity toity one. I will consider after a sleep. I got off my shift an hour ago. I need sleep.
Ziggy and Hooper both: There's that scene where Marge is interviewing a couple of Midwestern maybe-hooker barflies about the suspects, who they partied with in a local bar. WHATEVER THEY WOULD DRINK. 😄 Probably some peppermint schnapps abomination.
But now that I think about it, there are TONS of moments in that movie that would lend themselves to great drink names. The "Woodchipper," a variation on the Bloody Mary. Or the "Feliciano," which could be based on cheap Champagne. Or the "Fleeing the Scene," which would probably entail grain alcohol and desperation. There has to be a whole damn menu.
For Fargo: There's a woman on Facebook who goes by That Midwestern Mom, and she once made a cocktail involved whipped cream vodka, cranberries, and...jello? I think? Anyway, she's the most hilariously stereotypical Minnesotan and I cannot recommend her videos enough. (In reality, her name is Amber and she is a classically-trained operatic soprano.)
I have a question about a different drink, if that's okay. Years ago, I had a delicious Blackberry Bramble at the Milk & Honey bar in NYC, now closed (known for being pitch dark inside and no signage outside). I've tried several recipes since then, but none taste as good as that one. Do you have a good recipe?
First Bramble I ever had was at the Shelbourne in Dublin. It was Easter week and the weather was gorgeous!
Everybody was drinking these lovely cocktails on this lovely spring day. We were sitting at the bar and ask the bartender, "what is that you're making"? He replied, this is A Bramble, you HAVE to drink these on the first days of spring.
"Hendrick’s Oaisium gin" - the fuck is this? I know my Hendrick's and love it (I think I had six yesterday), but never heard of this. I shall have to go and explore the local higher end booze vendors to find this stuff.
My Father named our one of our dogs Pimms… next one Brandy. We also had a pair of birds named Gin and Tonic…. Definitely a reflection of his favourite weekend pastime.
And here I thought it was a movie reference -- "Airport '77" the not-really-a-sequel to "Airport" from 1970, which combined air disaster with "The Poseidon Adventure":
b. India didn't think they would and for the first time in a long time they are looking at parity in the air rather than domination. I'm curious if any neutral source knows how many aircraft and drones were shot down.
iii. This will run and run. And run some more. The suspension of the water treaty in the Punjab will be the next flashpoint.
(D). It amuses me no end that the Pakistani Army sends out its political glove puppets to talk to the media while India sends out women officers, one of whom is a Muslim.
FIVE. Fuck Mountbatten with a big fucky thing, if he had allowed the Radcliffe Commission to follow his guidelines then Kashmir would have gone to Pakistan and an awful lot of this would have been avoided.
Yesterday the garden store, aka greenhouse, was overrun by little old ladies buying plants before the rush of Mother's Day. We were there relatively early, and the staff were watering plants, so there were big thick hoses across the aisles in many locations. On two occasions, I bent down to lift the front wheels of some little old lady's cart to help her roll over the hoses. The second time I did it, I tweaked my back, just a little, nothing serious, but enough to complain about.
Mr. cc: Why'd you even do it?
Me: I just wanted to help that little old lady.
Mr. cc: You're a little old lady too now. You know that, right?
Yeah, just a couple of years ago I kept thinking there were a lot of old people around with walkers and using oxygen. Now with my chemo screwing up my lungs I may soon be one of them. Walking up the stairs slowly to the bedroom sometimes drops my O2 level to 85 and leaves me gasping for breath. So it looks like I am finally an old. And soon to be hooked up to oxygen, along with a chemo pump running into my chest portal for two days every two weeks.
I may eventually need to add a feeding tube if my stomach starts acting up again due to esophageal cancer, with a weight loss of 25 pounds between January 2024 and June 2024. That has since stabilized though. Oh, and neuropathy in my feet and fingers from the chemo makes my balance off, my gait shuffling, and a tendency to drop things and causing problems with buttons. For the good news last summer I didn't think I would make it to Halloween but I'm still around and bitching. I even managed to spend three hours this week babysitting with my great grand daughter, the prettiest baby on the East Coast.
But Trump runs the World!!111!!!1!! The other regional powers, including China, are much more involved and much more grown up about it. Bangladesh has a close history with both and usually plays the peacemaking little brother, China is the angry step-Dad, Iran and The 'Stans are the neighbours who really just want a quiet life, Russia used to play a bigger role but they are the Dad who moved to the other coast, Britain tries to get involved but they are the drunk uncle no-one listens to, and Turkey and Saudi are the sensible uncles who talk Pakistan down.
Ok everyone, at a mad attempt at keeping what is left of my sanity I am peacing out for the day. Everyone take good care of yourselves. Find one thing you love today and go do that. We can't let all the ASSHOLES take every single thing from us!
I've been looking at various SM articles about the new "Grounded in the Stars" statue in Times square and I probably shouldn't have. I knew the rank misogyny would be there but the misogynoir in specific was particularly heinous.
The absolute filth being spewed....I wish it were more like a boil being lanced but I don't think it is. It's more like a monster's vein got tapped and there's just more and more and I really don't know any longer what it's going to take for the host to bleed out and die.
They’ve all been granted permission by TFG to be as racist, sexist and homophobic and ableist as they can and they sure do use it. It’s horrible how many people were just waiting for permission to be their most evil selves.
I know. I'm still hoping this is just the last desperate death throes of an increasingly irrelevant population that should never have had the outsized amount of power they're clinging to but DAMMIT. They really ARE trying to kill as many of us as they can on their way out.
JD Vance stated that India and Pakistan would have to work out their issues themselves. Now Rubio is taking credit for convincing them to implement a ceasefire.

Prepping for Mother’s Day at the bar. Questions about the drink go here.
I don't drink and Mom's current med regimen means only 2-3 drinks a week. Dad's been experimenting with a few non-alcoholic versions of things for her tho, he's decent at drink mixing. We're going to go to the zoo instead.
We're doing lunch for Grandma on Sunday tho.
I would like to ask about the garnish. Is that supposed to be a special shape? Sorry I am unclear.
I was shooting for a commercial airline pilot’s badge.
Ah, yes, of course. Thank you.
Just remember, some folks are prepping for it from the other side of the bar. Thank your lucky stars if you're not one of them.
How much to prep my mother?
If she's like my Mom, prep yourself!
love me an aperol spritz. having a g&t right now. need to try your recipe.
Fargo?
I'd suggest some sort of Old Fashioned. For the wood chips (chipper) of course.
Take your time! Thank you.
Fargo? Bloody Mary of course!
What’s the movie?
Ziggy and Hooper both: There's that scene where Marge is interviewing a couple of Midwestern maybe-hooker barflies about the suspects, who they partied with in a local bar. WHATEVER THEY WOULD DRINK. 😄 Probably some peppermint schnapps abomination.
It could be called the "You Betcha." Or, the "Kinda Funny Lookin'."
#IYKYK
Or the Double-Head “Ya.”
Next week is Fargo. This week is Zootopia.
There was a period in the early aughts where the hometown drink of choice was - and I kid you not - a Rooty Dew, i.e. root beer schnapps & Mt Dew.
OR - and I don't remember if it had a name - a shot of peach schnapps blended with whipped cream.
And thus we see why the youth abandon farm country for life in the cittay.
For Zootopia, I would suggest a layered Hunch Punch. It fits the mood of happy co-existing chaos while acknowledging the individual components.
https://www.homebarmenu.com/recipe/hunch_punch
Layering this shit is easy, even in individual glasses. Hooper has told us how to do it dozens of times.
For Fargo:
A bloody Mary...
... served with a chip of Minnesota cedar.
For Zootopia: Absinthe.
Bourbon and ice!
That's definitely easy.
Ice is optional also too.
I have lately had a fondness for ice cold vanilla vodka chased with Sprite.
I have lately had a fondness for ice cold vanilla vodka chased with ice cold vanilla vodka.
Vanilla Absolut and Coke. Delicious. (Also, vanilla Absolut and orange Fanta. Creamsicle, anyone?)
I like lemon vodka and keep it in the fridge.

I need this drink recipe.
Ah, Milk and Honey. There should be a plaque outside that place. I’ll find one.
It was such a cool place. More like a quiet speakeasy, really.
Can I still call it "neat" if I swing it from the handle?
Yes.
Sounds great. I have Hendricks standard and Flora Adora in the bar.
"Hendrick’s Oaisium gin" - the fuck is this? I know my Hendrick's and love it (I think I had six yesterday), but never heard of this. I shall have to go and explore the local higher end booze vendors to find this stuff.
Papaya flavors? I am interested.
My wife and I both fell in love with gin recently.
Tragically... she recently found that she was diagnosed with...
an allergy to quinine.
Which sucks, she is all about the gin and fever tree.
It’s the one I haven’t tried, but I always come back to the original.
I love their Flora Adora and Summer Solstice gins.
It is worth it.
And good in G&Ts, you say. OK off to the store I go.
Oy.

First, falling off the flight deck into the ocean is not a "crash," and second, too busy to tie down a $70 million plane?
Isn't one of the running jokes about the military all the paperwork that goes along with the day to day operations? Try harder, man.
Make sexual assault in the military great again. Sexual aggression, my ass.
"They knew what they were signing up for"
a) MacFarland is an asshole, an ignorant fuckwit. b) it was my understanding that the recent splashes were d/t missed tailhook arrests during carrier landings, is this not the case?
One was an aircraft being moved at the same time the ship had to make serious evasive maneuvers.
They lost the plane and the tug that was moving it.
One was under tow on the deck and the tractor went overboard also
We heard that the aviator survived, but how about the operator of the tractor?
