Ta, Robyn. NY did the proper, but I'm too numb to enjoy it. Maybe later.

Any tiny bit of good news in welcome and this issue is top-of-mind...so YAY!

"In Colorado, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, and New York, voters elected to enshrine their current abortion-rights laws into their state constitutions — so that future lawmakers with nefarious intentions can’t mess with them. So that’s nice!"

Ummm . . .

Can't SCOTUS simply determine that certain provisions of state constitutions are unConstitutional under the US Constitution and strike them down?

lf so, what makes you think they won't?

If you make assumptions like that so freely, then why should you bother to do ANYTHING?

What assumptions?

I thought their rationale for overturning Roe v Wade was that abortion policy should be decided by the states. But since when has this court been consistent about anything.

My depresses self is wondering if this is white women voting for abortion because it affects them, and also voting for Trump because, oh, god who knows why anyone votes for Trump - racism, maybe?

Expand full comment

Can President Biden legalize all abortion nationwide using an executive order, and if so, can shitler undo it?

Expand full comment

Please, don't add insult to injury. We all know a national abortion ban is coming.

"they might need a different governor"

Rhonda Santis is term limited, but he still has three more years to

pull his Opus Dei bullshit.

Don't care what voters vote for - they're getting a national abortion ban.

Gonna protect those wimmins whether they want him to or not.

What women? I see livestock.

Brood stock, in particular.

I think a federal abortion ban would over-ride all of these, but I guess it was a nice try.

Basically if the file in NY and a few other federal courts, they can go to the appellate courts 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 9th to challenge it as an improper act of congress to outlaw a right of privacy.

We'll see. They howl about state's rights, so... hopefully if they try, it can get tied up in the courts for years (and preferably brought inthe right venues). Remember, marijuana is still Federally illegal, too.

Federal abortion ban, then contraceptive ban. All of the babies for everyone, whether they want them (and/or can support them) or not!

Anyone who thinks that AOC will make a great future president might want to pump the brakes on their excitement.

What white man do we support now?

Shapiro LOST PA! He couldn't deliver.

Gavin???? West Coast Lib Elite, but he could demagogue too....

If you thought MAGA was a cult before, this election will elevate his messiah-like status like we’ve never seen before.

In their mind he survived multiple assassination attempts, was spared from multiple politically motivated DOJ investigations, and triumphantly beat all odds to return to the White House.

They will attribute this to God’s favor and will worship him even harder than before. He practically has a license to do whatever he pleases.

We are so fucked.

fuck him...

But at least we can make jokes about his hair bad orange skin.

Well, all presidents get a 100 day Honeymoon. /s

Expand full comment

That's nice but also moot because we will have a federal ban after PAB is seated and whoever succeeds McConnell jettisons the filibuster into the sun.

Expand full comment

They'd need the 60 they don't have it now.

If cruz and tuberman can hold things up I don't see a reason for senate Dems not to do the same. Especially on nominees etc.

Expand full comment

Need 60 for what? Thought the filibuster was removable with a majority rule change?

Expand full comment

"Senate rules can be changed by a simple majority vote. Nevertheless, under current Senate rules, an amendment to the rules could itself be filibustered, with a vote of two-thirds of the senators present and voting needed to invoke cloture on a measure amending the Standing Rules. "

"The Senate can also set aside a provision of its Standing Rules by agreeing to a resolution to that effect. 60 votes are required to invoke cloture on such a resolution, so this is a more realistic alternative to an amendment to the rules."

So I thought they needed 60 votes or to amend the rules by majority.

RFK Jr. says ‘entire departments’ at FDA ‘have to go’

“In some categories … there are entire departments, like the nutrition department at the FDA … that have to go, that are not doing their job, they’re not protecting our kids,” Kennedy said during an interview on MSNBC.

A thing I saw elsewhere:

Canada probably feels like they live in the apartment above a meth lab right about now.

Expand full comment

Canada has felt that way for a long time now.

But anyone thinking "I'll move to Canada!" had better take a long hard look at our politics, because things are going very bad here, too. Polievre is going to suck Trump's cock so hard when he wins the next election. "Please Mr Almighty Leader, don't give us tariffs"

Expand full comment

They were saying the British Columbia election was a hopeless loss, too, but the voters didn't go along and we have a mildly left government for another few years, one that doesn't even have to get Green Party support to survive (and the Canadian Green Party is NOT the Moscow nuthouse of the American one).

Unfortunately Canada ain’t too far behind us in many ways. The next national elections there are going to be ugly.
