The reason Trump polls better on the economy is very simple. ALL Trumpers are stupid and/or delusional, so that's about 40% of the country. Then among normal people there are also a lot of idiots. Add in 24/7 lies and misinformation about the economy from the wingnutosphere (which are repeated uncritically by other so-called news outlets) and those poll results are understandable.

Times: "She said nothing about why voters think Mr. Trump and Republicans would be better on the economy."

Way to say the quiet part out loud, New York Daily Fishwrap. "The only thing we're interested in is horse-race politics."

Isn't answering the question you wish had been asked rather than the one that was actually asked a trait of politicians, not journalists? And I gotta say that shamelessly saying the quiet part out loud is a notable Trumpist trait these days. But I'm sure that I'm just a plebian and just don't understand how such lofty journalism works.

A real man of the people.

Donald Trump announced a new merchandise line on Thursday: A line of watches selling for up to $100,000 each. In a Truth Social post, the former president described the timepieces as "truly special" and suggested one "would make a great Christmas gift."

You can afford these watches if you stop eating avocado toast and drinking Starbucks.

For the life of me, I cannot imagine why VP Harris doesn't want to do a sit-down interview with the NYT editorial board given their obvious bad faith in reporting on anything and everything she says. Weird!

I think it was this week or last the Times had an op-ed "Why Liberals Should Listen to MAGA?" Why is it never the way around? Do they if they're nice to MAGA fascists, they'll get better gruel rations at the camps if God forbid Trump wins?

But Donald Trump has a concept!

Anyway, kudos to President Biden and VP Harris for seriously working to bring back domestic manufacturing. Not only is it ethical, but we never want the supply chain problems caused by Covid again, and apparently more pandemics will be in the future.

Well, sure. It wouldn't be very politic to say, "because they're brainwashed idiots, pumped full of bullshit by the likes of Douche Limbaugh and Uncle Rupert's Faux News Emporium."

Spot on! I hold Limbaugh personally responsible for much of it. Sadly, when pressed , he admitted that he didn't really believe most of the shit lies he spread. May his soul never find peace.

“federal intervention”

LOL. Fuck off. What industry and the right clearly gets, but people and the left repeatedly fail to understand, is that BUSINESS and GOVERNMENT are OPPONENTS! Business tries to tip the scale in their favor (to the point of becoming Royalty), and Government exists to tell them to fuck off, because Government represents THE REST OF US. We, The People, should pull all subsidies from profitable industries and let them scramble and squeal about their lost revenues. Then we should PICK THE WINNERS that serve a purpose that benefits us all, you know, like the original rules constraining corporate entities? The ones that said you had to prove a social benefit in order to incorporate, and when that purpose was served, incorporation was dissolved, like a ghost? How about THAT ORIGINALISM?

Keep pushing, you lazy, greedy fucks. The pendulum swings both ways, and guillotines are still a thing.

That is not originalism, you pinko, that is FAKE NEWS. Unless you have a quote from a witch burner, it doesn't count.

Our system of regulated capitalism had worked splendidly for decades, until fuck heads wanted to start lowering stated tax rates. Lower taxes DO NOT stimulate economic growth as a whole. They only serve to encourage cash hoarding by a very small minority of the population

Well duh! That’s what inevitably happens, even under “regulated” capitalism. Eventually, the owners will find loopholes and chinks in the regulatory armor, or the winds of political fortune change in favor of the capitalists.

There is no sane fucking reason why this race should be close. it should be a blowout for Harris/Walz. Speaking totally objectively, Trump/Vance are indeed the absolute worst candidates in history. The comparison is absurd. it's like saying the best batter on your HS baseball team was equal to Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth.

You keep assuming that humans are rational animals and are not driven by their base impulses; greed, bigotry, superstition. Some aren’t, but a large portion are.

I make no such assumption. Jane Goodall, noted primatologist who has spent 65 years studying primates, was asked if she was fond of chimpanzees, she said "no, not at all" seemed like a strange answer, when asked "why?" she responded, "because they act too much like humans"

Trump seems to have a weird fascination with Hannibal Lechter. WTF?? Why would he be concerned about people eating dogs or cats? Maybe his culinary fantasies, at least we hope they are fantasies, should be explored.

PBS coverage of the race last night focused on their recent economic messages and went on a Cletus Safari to find the stupidest trump supporters they could find so they could tell us all what they think about the economy. They reported that trump's message focused on tariffs, and they reported what he thinks the benefits would be. Now there has been plenty of reporting and also first-hand experience with tariffs through the years which tells us explicitly that tariffs will not do the shit that he says they will. But why would we expect those "reporters" to tell us that? I mean, if they reported those facts than their reporting wouldn't be evenhanded. And being evenhanded is more important than telling the American people the fucking truth. Fair and Balanced, PBS! Way to go.

Expand full comment
RRJKR's avatar

First of all, he falsely proclaims that tariffs are paid by the exporting country. "China will be paying us Billions of dollars in tariffs" he screams. Sounds great, if you don't know how tariffs work. I don't believe most people do.

Expand full comment
Zen Gali's avatar

It's not that complicated. Tariffs are supposed to make a product from overseas UNAFFORDABLE, so local manufacturers have a chance to compete. No local manufacturers? You go without until there are.
