Many firearm owners in the United States do not securely store their guns, even when the weapon is kept loaded and there are children in the home, according to a report released on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report, which relied on data from 2021 and 2022 from eight states, found that many gun owners kept weapons unlocked and loaded in their homes despite rising rates of suicides involving guns and firearm fatalities among children.
Gun storage practices varied across the eight states: Alaska, California, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma.
Of those surveyed in Ohio who had both children and a loaded gun in the house, about a quarter said that the weapon was kept unlocked; it was the smallest percentage among the seven states with available data for that metric. In Alaska, more than 40 percent of respondents fell into that category...
“Storing a firearm out of sight or out of reach is not secure firearm storage,” said Thomas Simon, who is an author of the study and a researcher at the C.D.C.’s Division of Violence Prevention.
“A father told me he didn’t even know his son knew he kept his firearm in the closet until he found his 15-year-old son’s body from a suicide.”
I think I mentioned that I had a tour guide in Iceland that (probably because he's horrified by US gun policy) mentioned that you *can* own a gun in Iceland, although it's strictly regulated. One thing they do there is surprise inspections, making sure any guns in the house are adequately secured. Not that the gun loons would ever go for in it, but I think if you have kids there should be checks put in place that your deadly weapons aren't accessible.
You turn in a declaration of good behaviour (government paper that says you don't have the type of history that makes you problematic, i.e. no relevant criminal record).
The gun club gives you a training.
The gun club decides if they want you as a member.
After you've been a member for a year and you've had at least 18 shooting sessions, you're allowed to buy a gun.
You go to a gun store and buy your gun, instead of the gun they hand you a form.
You take that form to the gun club and find two members willing to sign it for you.
Take that signed form to the police, they will give you a license to own a gun.
Now you finally get to pick up your gun. It will be handed to you in disassembled form.
You take your disassembled gun to the gun club where it is re-assembled and stored safely in a locker. At no point is the gun ever outside of the gun club in assembled form.
Hunters and gun traders have similar rules, with the rules for hunters the most relaxed, since you actually need your gun in functional form outside. The again, hunters need additional licenses and permits: Yearly hunting license, membership of a game management unit, zone permit for shooting a gun, and if you want to sell the meat you need a butcher's license as well. Alternatively, you can bring the carcass to a licensed butcher and they'll butcher it for you. When it comes to which animals you can hunt the following: Wild duck, rabbit, hare, pheasant, wood pidgeon (each has a specific season, of course). All other animals can only be hunted if the province determines there are too many of them, and then you get a number of kills you're allowed to make. This always requires a zone permit, even if you hunt without a gun.
Fun fact I just found out: Hunting with a ferret is a thing that happens often enough that it gets mentioned on the government website.
You can also use a falcon or most dogs (for some reason a few like whippets are excluded), if you really want a hunting menagerie. Though you need a falconer's certificate to hunt using a falcon.
I was being a tad facetious. As a teen, I used to accompany an Aunt & Uncle of mine when they'd go bird (pheasant, grouse) hunting in rural Ireland and we would always have at least one or two gun dogs with us.
Morning all! I woke up with a sore throat, bleh. I sound like Marge Simpson. ☹️
At least I won’t have to grow increasingly hoarse talking to Granny today, she’s still in the rehab unit for her arm. Small blessing? I think I’m gonna need to give the weed a break tonight, maybe. Womp womp.
Well, a few weeks ago I mentioned that I was having trouble sleeping but that I wasn't worried because sleep would return. And it has: took three naps yesterday and a four hour nap the day before PLUS going to bed early and sleeping like a rock.
It is better to be ready to slip into a nap at any moment than to be unable to sleep, that is for sure. My sympathy to all struggling with sleep in either direction!
Did Land Shark already post an article on Billionaire Boy Geeen-yus bragging on how he was gonna sell 1 billion robots by 15 years from his new Tesla manufacturing arm, all at 10K a pop? Dunno, but the numbers seem a little sus, there, bro.
Living with a bleeder is often entertaining. Like this morning. I need to go in early because it is gonna be (how ya feelin?) hot hot hot, so I get up, stretch, batcat leaps onto the bed for the morning howdy do and nails husband's foot in the process.
Much cussing is the result.
So instead of peeing then strolling down stairs to feed cats, have my morning caffeine and the like, I am running about grabbing bandages and neosporin. Only the cut is too long for a regular, so back down I go for the gauze and pad. Only I forgot to snag the tape, so back down and up I go.
Guess I got some exercise in at least.
Also, he waited til I taped it up to tell me it felt too lose. That was irksome.
Kind of OT, Detroit restored its formerly-abandoned train station, and it's MAGNIFICENT. Go Detroit!!!
I want the Sears Tower. I want to make it completely unrentable an then get huge tax breaks like Trump Tower.
I just want one with an old water cistern on the roof.
I will buy Trump Tower and implode it.
Better yet, keep it and turn it into a center for social activism, where the great Unwashed can plot the downfall of the billionaire class.
ok
Someone/ group should def put together a co-op to buy one of these buildings to do… stuff in (orgies).

What is the debate?
Well, I do hear Trump is a master debater, mostly from his cult members.
I meant WHEN, LOL.
Why? the reason for the debate is the election. :P

Here's how you can own a gun in The Netherlands:
Go to a gun club to try to become a member.
They interview you.
You turn in a declaration of good behaviour (government paper that says you don't have the type of history that makes you problematic, i.e. no relevant criminal record).
The gun club gives you a training.

When ferrets are outlawed, only outlaws will have ferrets!
Actually, ferrets are already outlawed as pets here in California.
Go find Rudy Guiliani's rant on ferrets. He became positively unhinged on his radio programme when he was mayor.
