I keep thinking about how Renee Good was the person JD Vance told us we needed to be: a white, Christian, mother. And yet, she was intentionally killed by an ICE agent, who swore at her after taking his shots. There is no guaranteed, protected category, and no safe place if ICE wants to go after you. With warrentless home invasions, job site raids, attacks on schools, and road blocks, where drivers are dragged from their cars, it's clear that it's not necessary to be outside, protesting on foot, to be arrested, beaten, and maybe killed.
And Vance, Noem, Miller, and Trump, with a little help from Bessent, will never stop lying. If you are the person they have told you to be, but end up beaten or killed by ICE, they will happily shift their story, in order to make you the instigator of your own attack. An ICU nurse, who loves to help people, becomes a terrorist, and a mother, whose family, community and Christianity are central to her, becomes a...terrorist.
That’s all they have, threats that bad things will happen to them, or that good things will be taken away. They don’t offer any plan or hope for a better future. They barely pay lip service to the national debt, simply promising to end it on Day 1 along with the war in Ukraine and all the Haitian pet-eating. People do have fears. They do distrust, suspect, and doubt. It’s not hard to tell them their fears are justified. They are smart and right to be afraid of “them.” Politicians promising a better world is a much harder sell.
I remember discovering an acquaintance was MAGA-lite when we discussed the endless list of ways Trump was horrible. He just listened to me, nodded a little, and then said, “yeah, but there’s SOMETHING about Biden that’s not right. The way he hugs people. His smile. You know there’s something wrong there.” Fear of the unknown is often worse than a known monster. MAGA can live with Trump, because he hates some of the things they hate. But Biden must be hiding something.

I doubt they want to live in a truly Christian nation - they want to live in a "Christianist" nation, one where they only have to pay lip service to the Christian faith while continuing to ignore it's teachings if it benefits them.

The message is this: If you record something on your phone and publish it, post it online or otherwise share it, and the Trump Administration doesn’t like it, you risk the full weight of the federal government falling on your head like a hammer.
