No offense to parents who identify too much with their kids, but I can't imagine a scenario where my identity would be based on my kid's career.

Not being qualified to attend the performing arts school one dreams of is, I admit, a bitter pill to swallow, especially if that means that one's coveted slot might be usurped by someone who is qualified to attend said performing arts school and did the classwork to get there.

Behold the salt tears steaming down my face.

Am I an empathetic old codger? Man, am I ever!

It should be noted, however, in the interests of accuracy, that even entrance to the performing arts school of one dreams of does not guarantee success in the crazy world of the Show of Biz.

For instance, many great actors have been trained at prestigious schools of the Thespian Arts and established brilliant careers. Other actors who attended those same establishments have crashed and burned. Still others have managed some sorts of minor careers, even paid the bills, without ever achieving wide success.

Other great actors stumbled onto the stage or screen attempting to adjust the scenery and have achieved great success.

It's a dice throw, although if you already have two successful parents in the b.g., less of a roll.

I realize that many young second-and-third-and-more generation actors want to avoid the perception that they are getting a leg up merely by virtue of birth.

However, since that perception has turned out to be true in criminal court, my suggestion would be that a better test of her daughterly resolve would be a season or ten in rep theater.

What a bullshit system we live in.Celebrities, actors, and so forth can get hit with a felony and still get jobs. I get a speeding ticket, I can lose my livelihood.

I'm not saying we should start building guillotines for them. Just for the jurists.
