One of the few things Pope John Paul II ever said that remains worth remembering is his description of Football (soccer): "Of all the unimportant things, football is the most important." That has meant a lot to me as a youth soccer coach, especially in the context of coaching boys. Seeing how terribly sideways the lives of young men can go when they are left to play first-person shooter games and scroll their way down rabbit-holes of racism and misogyny, I often feel that working with groups of boys to develop their skills and love for an unimportant game is, ultimately, very important.
Yet, what is so interesting is that so many men assume that this is something that another man would do. Like, they imagine a trans athlete as just a man pretending to be a woman and they think "oh, yeah, a man would totally do that."

The NCAA announced there are something like 10 trans athletes total out of the thousands of student athletes in the nation. So this is a non-issue even before you consider the “merit” of fairness in sports. There are so few examples, it’s staggering that our potus and congress are so obsessed with this. People like Nancy Mace are small-minded and petty. She self-righteously shouted in Congress that democrats want “penises in women’s bathrooms and I won’t stand for it.” In a serious, healthy government she would be gently led from the chamber and handed off to her family to keep her safe and comfortable.
Meanwhile, our social services and programs designed to deliver aid are being gutted by Elon Musk so that trillions are available for his aspirations and other billionaire donors. It’s redistribution of wealth in reverse - stealing money from millions of people and giving it to the wealthy. Right out in the open, where voters can see. Even social security payments are in jeopardy. But as long as 10 trans athletes are humiliated and excluded, it’s worth losing everything.
