My grandfather had a limp and "bum foot" from it being crushed by a charging police horse during a steelworker strike in 1915, a precursor to the big 1919 strike. After the strike ended, he was fired from the mill because he had a bad foot and couldn't do his job. Go figure. He was visited by the FBI during the McCarthy era due to his organizing of farm workers but avoided arrest because his wife was dying of cancer and he had to take care of her and the kids. My commie roots were born of the labor movement. Eugene Debs was god in our family.
