Good Morning

On Saturday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers detained Mahmoud Khalil – a recent Columbia University graduate who helped lead the Gaza solidarity encampment – at his New York City home, an apartment building owned by the school, says advocates.

According to the advocates, at around 8:30 PM, Khalil and his wife – who is eight months pregnant – had just unlocked the door to their building when two plainclothes DHS agents pushed inside behind them. The agents allegedly did not identify themselves at first, instead asking for Khalil’s identity, before then detaining him.

The agents proceeded to tell Khalil’s wife that if she did not leave her husband and go to their apartment, they would arrest her too. The agents claimed that the State Department had revoked Khalil’s student visa, with one agent presenting what he claimed was a warrant on his cell phone. But Khalil, according to advocates, has a green card. Khalil’s wife went to their apartment to get the green card.

“He has a green card,” an agent apparently said on the phone, confused by the matter. But then after a moment, the agent claimed that the State Department had “revoked that too.”

Meanwhile, Khalil had been on the phone with his attorney, who was trying to intervene, asking why he was being detained, if they had a warrant, and explaining that Khalil was a green card holder. The attorney had circled back to demanding to see a warrant when the agents apparently instead hung up the phone.

Khalil was initially being detained in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in downtown New York, pending an appearance before an immigration judge.

Zeteo has reached out to DHS, ICE, and the State Department and is waiting for comment

Khalil, who is Palestinian, served as a lead negotiator amid the campus’s Gaza solidarity encampment last spring. He had appeared in several media interviews, in the past telling outlets he had a student visa. Advocates say he had gotten his green card since.

Bot Jr volunteers at the local animal shelter. We agreed he could do that as long as he didn’t bring any home. Somehow, we ended up with three cats at once almost 2 years ago.

Last month a cat was brought into the shelter that was acclimated to people but clearly had been abandoned or dumped at some point. He was covered with fleas, and had three wounds that required surgery. He was also a few pounds lighter than his frame suggested he should be.

He wormed his way into Bot Jr’s heart while he recovered from his injuries and getting “fixed” and chipped.

Now our three kitties are going through the trauma of a new kitty invading their home. Olivia, in particular, has turned into a hissing growling hellion.

The bonus is that he’s the sweetest kitty ever. All he wants is love and scritches. None of our other three are lap cats, he jumps up on laps and demands affection. When he approaches the other three, his tail is up and he walks right up to them, nose to nose, trying to be friends. Hopefully they’ll get used to him soon.

With news reporting FFOTUS is backing a US "golden passport" for anyone investing $5 million in America, there's a cheaper alternative: Nauru is offering citizenship for only $105,000 dollars. As an extra added binus, Nauru does not have an extradition treaty with the US.

Link: https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/05/climate/nauru-passport-program-rising-seas/index.html

There doesn't seem to be any residency requirement, so one doesn't have to worry about rising sea levels there.

They were talking about getting rid of it last year and maybe have changed it since, but Portugal only requires a $500K investment for a Golden Visa. I think Spain is similar and other countries have them too at much less than $5M. But $5M is cheap money for even modestly successful criminals I guess.

Expand full comment
Whale Chowder's avatar

Portugal has already dropped the golden visa and Spain is in the process. Both countries have figured out it's not worth the trouble and the citizens resent the fuck out of it.

My second cousin's kid ( third cousin? ) is in Portugal. He originally went there to attend school and be with his girlfriend, but now I understand he's working there ( which surprised me ). I'm pretty sure he doesn't have $500k to buy citizenship there.

Expand full comment
Pope Scipio Haverhillicus's avatar

If you go there on a work visa or a passive income visa and stay there for five years you can apply for citizenship. I assume you can apply for a work visa if you complete school there too.

The Nauru offer is said to not be available to anyone with a criminal record - but, who knows?

Expand full comment
Pope Scipio Haverhillicus's avatar

Nauru is going to disappear under the sea but they are talking about keeping the territorial rights and continuing to claim that part of the ocean. So even if it does disappear, citizens might still reap benefits from fishing and underwater minerals and stuff.

Here's my considered business plan for Nauru:

Accept construction rubble from The Philippines, Australia, hell, even as far away as Hawaii. I grew up on the SF Peninsula and watched whole cities being built where there used to be nothing but the bay. How much of Manhattan was landfilled? If USAmerica survives our current political time bomb, perhaps we could help later by scuttling a mothballed ship or two as anchor points? Just spitballing here.
