I knew a Mongo once. He was the security guard at my first job in NYC, in 1984. I worked the accessory counter in a punk clothing store in the Village called Flip. He was such a nice guy and just as big as the Mongo from Blazing Saddles. A Samoan, I don't know if Mongo was his real name but he looked after me, a 21 year old kid with a mohawk from Indiana trying to make it in the big city. Once some young guys came to my counter, I had my own cash register and any money lost came out of my pocket. So one guy keeps me busy while the other starts to go for the cash, I got around the counter to grab his arm and he pulled back his other hand to punch me in the face. He was suddenly lifted off the ground by the back off his neck. It was Mongo, he dragged this guy to the front , the dude's toes barely scraping the floor and threw him out the door. Creep landed on a parking meter and was knocked out. His friends grabbed him and they got the fuck out of there.
I wonder what happened to Mongo, he was good to me, would bring me coffee everyday and made sure no one fucked with me.

During a speech honoring Mel Brooks as a Kennedy Center Honoree, former President Barack Obama mentioned going to see this film at the age of 12. When Brooks asked how he got in with the ratings restriction, Obama replied, "I think I had a fake ID, that I got with my fake birth certificate" before adding, "The statute of limitations has passed."
