Slightly sprained my ankle running through the woods in my boat shoes to find the dead party.

Mavenmaven's avatar

Yay, the glitch is gone!

Majordomo Billy Bojangles's avatar

And, as if by magic, the Girl Guides article is no longer paywalled.

Thanks to whichever admin fixed this.

Snarfyguy's avatar

A friend found himself in some criminal legal trouble out in California.

Another friend remarked "Yeah, he did things that were bad, even by our standards."

blueicebank's avatar

It's always possible some hacker REALLY hates the Girl Guides of Canada. That's the conspiracy theory I'm going with.

Jens TINGLEFF's avatar

The "girl guides of Canada" post is saying "This post is for paid subscribers"

Now, I am paying Wonkette regularly, but I didn't know that there was a difference in the eyes of Substack?

ziggywiggy's avatar

When you are putting together a post it can be easy to accidentally have it set for "Paid subscribers only" because that is what Substack has as the default. You have to change it for every post.

Hollysdower's avatar

Oh wow, one little "oops", and hundreds are freaking out in the earlier thread!

Jens TINGLEFF's avatar

Sure thing.

Scary how well I blend in. No thought of scrolling down and see if anyone else had noticed it already :-)

phantom_stranger's avatar

It's a glitch of some sort. It's happened before.

helenasgarden's avatar

We're thinking it's a glitch or hack.

Jens TINGLEFF's avatar

OK.

I'll be sure to complain like a little, herm, complaining type of person if it recurs

;-)

Stulexington's avatar

There are two possibilities, either Trump wants to blow up Elon's signature accomplishment or this is an excuse to funnel money to Tesla.

YaJagoff's avatar

I'm gonna go with your second theory.

Hollysdower's avatar

Oh man, I bet Elon's gonna be a bitch about it. Using his useless, unsellable trucks for target practice? That's gonna hurt his ego. I don't think he'll do this, unless they pay him full price for those trucks. And why would they do that?

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

Are we sure this isn't an onion article? I mean, you can buy a 74 plymouth for 50 bucks and it still runs.

Stulexington's avatar

I mean they could be making sure they can target electric vehicles but there's way cheaper ways to do it. Though of course the army has never been known to save a dollar when it can spend 2 more.

Hollysdower's avatar

Yeah, they could get junk cars that still barely run from any junkyard and use those for so much cheaper. I feel like they're doing this to personally insult Elon. I kinda love that part of it, but I hate our military paying Elon ANY money whatsoever.

YaJagoff's avatar

This story was originally featured on Fortune.com. Also too, the 74 Plymouth is worth more than a Cybertruck and much better looking.

Martin Shobe's avatar

In a few months, a memo instructing tanks deploying in areas where there might be cybertrucks to be equipped with fire hoses.

Mavenmaven's avatar

That's one way to get rid of excess inventory- at the taxpayer's expense.

Or, they want to train the air force to attack civilian targets.

Hollysdower's avatar

Do they need to be trained in that? Most armies have killing civilians down pat.

NatalyaResists's avatar

"If you wanted to put the brakes on technology developments and take a close look at them under this political situation—the distribution of power between Republicans and Democrats—that’s really not going to happen. The door is pretty open to the interpenetration of high tech and the Defense Department.”

That doesn't sound very good. Anywho, they can have my beat up Subaru sedan for a million bucks, cuz I don't know what it's gonna take to destroy that thing. It'll be good practice.

Snarfyguy's avatar

At least those trucks are good for something.

phantom_stranger's avatar

They'll probably make the missiles spontaneously fail to detonate.

good_duck's avatar

On the bright side, I will probably accomplish more this afternoon.

Oh look, baseball! Never mind.

YaJagoff's avatar

If the Girl Scout article is gonna be the Open Thread, I guess I'm done for the day. Or I could just read and post non comments on the Movie night thread.

phantom_stranger's avatar

Welcome to the outcast club!

blueicebank's avatar

This is a refugee camp. Someone needs to be from the UN.

Snarfyguy's avatar

At least something works!

phantom_stranger's avatar

Paywalled out of the current post because I don't (and will not) use the app.

Hollysdower's avatar

I don't like apps. I'm a computer person, I barely understand smartphones. I use mine to call and text and occasionally consult a map. I don't doomscroll.

Jens TINGLEFF's avatar

being on the app does not help. On the app it's helpfully marked with a little padlock and all.

blueicebank's avatar

I tried to use it, and even then it didn't work. And this time it isn't Apple's fault.

YaJagoff's avatar

The world would be a better place if moar people would pull their head outta their app.

EyeQueue's avatar

I will not move to the app. I hate fucking apps and resent when I am forced to use them.

And I subscribe but not via Substack.

phantom_stranger's avatar

I tried the app. It was not good.

Snarfyguy's avatar

Fuck apps.

I hate doing things (especially typing) on my phone.

Mister Bubbles's avatar

I hated it too until my son showed me the swipe keyboard. Just drag your finger over the words, and about 90% of them come out right the first time.

Hollysdower's avatar

Yeah, if I typed my posts with 2 thumbs they'd be incoherent

blueicebank's avatar

It appears Wonkette just paywalled itself, unless you download an ap for IoS or Android.

Bye, everyone. I'm on a desktop computer.

Snarfyguy's avatar

Same on a PC laptop running Chrome.

I think this is just a Substack glitch that we've seen before.

blueicebank's avatar

I can't get past it, except on this thread.

helenasgarden's avatar

That's what I'm guessing. Or hackers.

Hooker P Tape skipping dipshit's avatar

I cant read Andrew's post because my subscription is grandfathered in from pre-substack. I don't pay the substack surcharge so I guess I don't exist any more.

UVB-76's avatar

Yup.

I have plenty of non-Wonkette things I can do instead.

Hollysdower's avatar

Just what I came here to ask. I was able to read the whole story for free, but when I tried to reply, the Reply button wasn't there, and when I refreshed the page, it was suddenly behind a paywall. Which is weird, cause Wonkette said that would never be the case? Maybe they were hacked.

I really hope this doesn't become pay-to-read. There are so many sites I used to visit for liberal news, and they are all going behind paywalls. New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Wired, the former Gawker sites...where else am I supposed to go for news that does not insult my intelligence?

abbienormal's avatar

Nah. Something happened with Substack I imagine. Rebecca or Dok could fix it but I don't want to email them on a Sunday.

Majordomo Billy Bojangles's avatar

I think this will turn out to be the case. I pay by the year as a one-time donation and even if it were their intention to paywall the article, they would be cutting off the Patreon and other non-Substack paying non-commentors.

I'm sure this is a momentary misunderstanding, and I urge folks not to go away until it's resolved or clarified.

EyeQueue's avatar

I subscribe via Patreon and not Substack.

RocktonSam's avatar

Why this all of a sudden?

ShrillKitty's avatar

Because it's a fuckup

[Redacted]'s avatar

Has something happened with non-comments? At the Sunday morning thread, I was told I had to join Substack to see the thread, and to download the Substack AP, but this didn’t seem to work intuitively. Do we now have to formerly join through Substack? What about our existing PayPal accounts, because I don’t know how to cancel those

Birb-General of the US's avatar

If you have multiple Substack or google accounts, and you inadvertently sign in using the wrong one, Substack will think you're a new user and prompt you to sign in. Also you could try turning it off and turning it back on again, that's the only thing I know that works.

Hollysdower's avatar

I wonder if their site is glitching or if they've been hacked, this is very strange.

EyeQueue's avatar

This. I can't even read the Girl Guides thread now. I *am* a paid subscriber via Patreon. I've never not been able to access an article like this. :(

ShrillKitty's avatar

Hey new thread is now saying it's subscriber-only :(

YaJagoff's avatar

I got the same thing. I read the article and was reading the non comments and even posting a few non comments but could not 'like' any non comments. Now I can't even read the article.

Hollysdower's avatar

And I had a really apt story about visiting Canada with my Brownie troop when I was 10!

EyeQueue's avatar

The exact same thing happened to me. I can't even access it now.

SAMushrush's avatar

seriously, what is the with the sudden change?

EyeQueue's avatar

I think it's just a mistake. Things like this have happened before (not being able to like a post or comment), but not being blocked completely from reading.

I suspect it's just a glitch or a setting that needs to be changed.

Khavrinen's avatar

Substack taking lessons from Disqus now?

YaJagoff's avatar

*shoulder shrug*

Florida’s universities face research overhaul courtesy of Trump and DeSantis

President Donald Trump’s efforts to reshape higher education in a conservative mold aren’t just targeting Ivy League elites. They’re stripping millions from Florida universities — and the state’s Republican governor is happy to help.

Florida’s terminated NIH and NSF grants eclipse $170 million in total federal funding over recent year {with} (a)t least $80 million in obligated but unspent money is estimated to be lost by Florida toward these grants, the data shows.

Most faculty with any sense have been fleeing Florida colleges and universities.
