I talk to many elderly people who have the misconception that once you reach a certain age, you are not required to file. This is NOT true! If you owe even a small. amount of tax the penalties for not filing can be pretty steep I'm also aghast at the number of "accountants" I run into who are abysmally ignorant of tax laws.
I always file. And last year I ended up owing the state $8. I paid it. In most states, failing to file returns is a misdemeanor. If you earn interest on investments, inherit money or real estate, even though you're retired you must file.
