I was the Post Supervisor, hired when shooting wrapped in Pittsburgh and moved to LA. I had a friend who was a friend of George's editor. Normally I would have tried to arrange all of it (picture editing, sfx, dialogue, foley, ADR, music and so on... but some of it was already staffed with George's long-timers (great folks!) and other areas required by Orion. They didn't like George's cut so it felt like a new pot prod period started over. Yes, there was a re-shoot; in fact it was the final surgery scene which George fought against (we all did) because that's such a classic and shitty film-school device: oh, it was just a dream! It was my first experience with the loathsome and now-customary practice of Preview Screening, in which 300 teenagers get free tickets to see a rough-cut version and then get to dictate changes to the studio. Guaranteed dumbing-down.The good story: Ella the Monkey (real name Boo) was meticulously "revoiced" by the amazing Frank Welker. I thought it would take forever but this guy knocked out the whole movie in about a day, lip-syncing it all to picture.
