I would never suggest forgetting what happened. But since the Civil War was fought to preserve the Union - to keep the Southern states from leaving - it wouldn't make much sense to make martyrs after it was over. Providing real economic benefits to the former slaves would have gone a long way toward rebuilding our nation.
