Next week we watch 𝐎 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮?

When I scheduled it, it was free on YouTube, sorry to say that is no longer true. I could not find it for free anywhere. $3.99 to rent in the usual places.

Dennis Patterson, Psy.D.'s avatar

Great movie

Goonemeritus's avatar

I think it's about time there was a movie like this where the old guy gets the girl.

Doloras LaPicho's avatar

The book is far superior and doesn't rely so much on magical coincidence.

And ends with Jimmy and a couple of the survivors starting a country-punk band instead.

Ellen_D, domestic terrorist's avatar

Waiting for him to provide evidence to back up his assertion that Mahmoud Khalil is "pro-Hamas" and that is grounds for deporting a permanent resident without due process.

SkeptiKC's avatar

FUCK the entire far-Reich and their fetid fuhror off into oblivion.

TerseNurse's avatar

any particular reason now, or just on general principles?

VaselineHabits's avatar

... with an infected rusted dick

VaselineHabits's avatar

Blood work shows White cell count lower than it was 3 days ago... so chances are it ISNT an infection of some sort

So we're being sent home after an IV and some nausea and pain meds. I don't even know anymore because NOW it's my fault for dragging him up to an ER that can't do anything. Hopefully he won't be a butthead all day but I feel like I can't do much but worry and Google my possible causes.

Basically the ER doctor keeps saying "follow up with your regular doctor" for all these other questions. Jfc, hope the VA can figure something out (ain't our first rodeo, maybe in a year with multiple trips to out of town VAs we might get an answer).

Probably just go home and bath the puppy, wash clothes, and cry. May need more Resident Alien and Northern Exposure in my day - but I'm sure as fuck taking Monday off.

Zyxomma's avatar

Sympathy for you both. Younger Sister went to the ER Thursday; it's diverticulitis. She got IV antibiotics and strong antibiotics to take at home. Scary symptoms are scary. Hugs.

helenasgarden's avatar

I get the feeling he is terrified. Hugs.

InMyRoom's avatar

If he is going to be a butthead and make it all your fault that you are trying to help him find out what is wrong so he can get well, tell him he is in charge of his medical care from now on. He can make the appointments and ask to be taken to the ER when the pain gets bad enough. It's his health, he needs to take some responsibility for getting well.

Reassure him you will be there and do what he thinks needs to be done.

Tough love.

TerseNurse's avatar

not fer nuthin', but a falling WBC count is not necessarily a *good* thing, esp if symptoms persist. Beware of Dr. Google, but get in to see your PCP or a decent provider ASAP is my unsolicited advice.

VaselineHabits's avatar

He's got his VA phone appt Monday. I guess that's his primary since it's fucking impossible to find one in Corpus under BlueCross

But that's another issue altogether. Yay American Health Care Scam System

A personal best:

35 minutes, 7.47km run.

I am pleased with myself and probably going to get gelato.

VaselineHabits's avatar

I may need to work out today because I don't think NOT working out has helped anything

My personal goal is 2 miles in 36 minutes.

TerseNurse's avatar

nice. I just did 6.75km in a blistering 48 minutes. I think I AM gelato!

I am listening to the audiobook of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staying_Power:_The_History_of_Black_People_in_Britain Staying Power.

The history of racist violence in the UK is something we have done extremely well to cover up.

We like to sneer at the US, but we did a lot of it first and we didn't stop.

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

and, um, Britain brought a lot of black folks over here for sale....

MRK's avatar

It is odd what parts of a thread I can or can't access after being blocked. If it seems like I'm ignoring a response, that's probably why. Sorry.

Biff52 Lost Canadian's avatar

That is what is keeping me from blocking someone who has been throwing around a lot of personal attacks lately. I don't want to miss the rest of the thread.

MRK's avatar

It will only affect a thread where you and they have already interacted. After that, any stuff with them is just gone, and you don’t really notice it anymore. The timing in this particular case was just odd enough for me to say something, because people were responding to me but I couldn’t interact with those posts.

“Maybe it’s time to go back to exploring the Gulf of America,” Pouyanné said. “The new administration is opening the Gulf. It has been slowed down after the Macondo drama,” he said, referring the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the largest in the history of marine drilling operations.

“Drama?” Fuck that guy.

Also, Macondo? Call it Deepwater Horizon, that’s what it’s called.

By the time any new drilling actually produces anything, will anyone still want it?

jamesHatt the Magnificent's avatar

If you read the article, some oil execs are like “meh, we don’t need to do that.”

MRK's avatar

If I recall correctly, Trump opened up some parts of Alaska, and the courts forced Biden to open some areas as well, and none of have been drilled because the oil companies see no point in doing so.

Utah Sen. John Curtis said on Thursday it’s important to be mindful that tariffs are “disproportionately hard on small businesses,” and that many of his constituents are “trying to navigate it.” He added, “They want to support the president. They want to give him the space that he needs, but it’s also very hard to navigate.”

Translation: MAGA dimwits REFUSE to admit that they got conned.

Thank fuck block works now.

EyeQueue's avatar

SkeptiKC's avatar

My most humble thanks.

EyeQueue's avatar

I don't think she was correcting you. I think she was saying present company is excepted from getting stupider, and are also "accepted" and loved by everyone here. XD

Lil Snot's avatar

This right here. Just embracing us weirdos!

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

No, you were right the first time, Skepti. All those 'except'...

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

It's that brain plastic, isn't it? The Romans had lead poisoning. We have soybeans. There's a kind of weird justice in that, ain't there?...

MRK's avatar

We have a culture that values ignorance and rewards laziness. That doesn't make people less intelligent, it just encourages people not to use it. That's all been true at least as long as America has been America. It is perhaps a little easier to go through life never trying to learn to anything now.

Anarchy Pony's avatar

Cognitive offloading. It's one reason people can be happy to submit to authoritarianism. The authority can do the thinking for me, and absolve me of that pesky responsibility.

InMyRoom's avatar

I see this pretty often. Especially at work. You do your job, people higher up tell you what the job is. If it's not the right thing to do, or way to do it - not their fault. Some work cultures, like some teachers, do not want questions or suggestions.

MRK's avatar

Sorry, that film was based way too much in eugenics for me to use it to describe reality.

EyeQueue's avatar

Looking at it via culture also works. These MAGA shitters are having more kids than the rest of us, and they end up being stupider not due to genetics (though I'm sure some of that is part of the problem) but due to listening to generations of their disgusting, worthless, pathetic families indoctrinating them with a load of right wing bullshit.

MRK's avatar

Except that the culture I'm talking about is the one we were all raised in, and many of us find ways to push back against it. So will many of those children. Culture encourages a certain path, but does not require it.

Lil Snot's avatar

I meant the concept, not the film, but fair point

MRK's avatar

Bullshit. People are people, people have been making the same complaints about other people for as long as we have written records, and there is no objective measure of intelligence.

helenasgarden's avatar

Reductive. Basically ignorant.

MRK's avatar

I don't see how looking at millennia of human history and concluding that we've had the same complaints for that whole time is ignorant. And I couldn't reply to your other post directly, but I do find it amusing when people look for some relatively recent time to explain how the country of snake oil and slavery has gotten worse. To put it another way, the idea that this country was better before the 1970s requires ignoring a lot about what this country was before the 1970s.

helenasgarden's avatar

The reasoning is reductive. Still.

MRK's avatar

How so? How is reductive to notice that people have been having the same arguments for as long as we have record of it, and that reactionaries have always relied on getting people to dream of some better world we need to return to, and so to reject that kind of argument?

Likewise, I’m still waiting for you to explain to me how you can honestly think this country was a better place before the 70s.

Daniel's avatar

Well, now i've got Depeche Mode stuck in my head

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

“Our youth now love luxury, they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders, and they love to chatter instead of exercise. Children are now tyrants not servants of their household. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

- Socrates

Sister Artemis's avatar

lol, reading through this thread, I was thinking about that quote, though I couldn't remember it exactly, nor who said it. Thanks for posting.

I remember my folks talking about some ""old fashioned" jazz they had on the turntable when I was a young teenager, and how radical and discordant it was to their elders when my folks were teens (I think it was Duke Ellington and Ella, or something like that). I got it, in that conversation, that someday MY music would be for oldsters, and I wouldn't understand the music of that future era.

THen in college, our professor shared the above Socrates quote with us. All it's missing is "kids these day! with their music!"

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

....and look what happened to the Greeks!... Shut up, Soc! Oh, I guess he did...

EyeQueue's avatar

I am convinced it's getting worse. While this country has always been stupid, there has been a precipitous drop in markers for "intelligence" that aligns in the upswing of the "smart" phone and social media.

I witnessed it teaching at university and colleges between 2000 and 2023. This is not the same as "the same complaints." This is different in both speed, magnitude and harm to this fucking country.

MRK's avatar

I've heard this all before. I've also read the same complaints about 'kids these days' going back millennia. Which I know I've said to you before, so there's no point in continuing this conversation.

EyeQueue's avatar

And yes, "kids these days" are exactly as they are for millennia. The tech doesn't make a difference, right?

Piss off.

EyeQueue's avatar

All bow down to MRK who knows everything!

MRK's avatar

That is not what I claimed. That's all I'm going say here.

EyeQueue's avatar

As I said. You apparently know better.
