I really enjoyed that one, but I was somewhat disappointed to read the book and find out that, like "Hidden Figures", the script takes a lot of license with what the nonfiction book says happened. It sure makes for a good movie, though.
It took me probably five times watching "The Full Monty" before I understood almost everything that was said in it. Since living in England, though, it's hard to imagine that I DIDN'T understand everything at one time. I guess you could say I'm completely bilingual now since I speak/understand both American and British English. Or trilingual, if you include northern English, lol!
I have at least one objection to this list - that of John Fetterman - but it also strikes me that most of these would face a long row to hoe to not only get the Democratic nomination, but to appeal to enough of the middle-of-the-road voters out there ( I doubt that any candidate could get the MAGA vote, no matter who is the GOP candidate - assuming, of course, we have a 2028 election and FFOTUS has not whipped the Republican Congress into allowing him a third term ( there's a move to do that, despite the 22nd Amendment )
Today's NYT finally got me to cancel. Yesterday's "Cletus Safari" of FFOTUS ( "First Felon on the United States" ) supporters was annoying enough, but this morning, they headlined a piece about undocumented immigrants from India, which is just throwing gasoline on the fire of illegal immigration and the whole H1B visa arguments - and then they posted an article saying that the new CIA director, John Ratcliffe, has "revised" the conclusions of a CIA report ( with no new evidence ) claiming that COVID-19 originated in a lab leak - which is clearly a political motivated revision. Both NYT stories did NOT allow comments, so they're basically unchallenged.
My cancellation doesn't take effect until Feb 8th ( I had already paid my January fee ), so maybe I'll post some gift links in the next few days - if not for "legitimate" news reproting, but for more egregious examples.
I'm still keeping my WaPo subscription for a time - but reneal of that ( on an annual basis ) comes soon...

From SNL last night Michael Che addresses "Elon the Nazi" with five words:
βElon Musk was criticised for his speech at a rally after the inauguration in which he appears to give the Nazi salute. But come on, Elon Musk is not a Nazi,β Che said of the man behind the much maligned Cybertruck. βThe Nazis made nice cars,β quipped Che, referencing the origins of Volkswagen.
South Korea shows us how it's done. They have a Supreme Court and a 'Constitutional Court', neither of which appear to be as corrupt and compromised as our SCOTUS.
"South Korean prosecutors on Sunday indicted impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on rebellion in connection with his short-lived imposition of martial law, news reports said, a criminal charges that could put him to death or jail for life if convicted.
This is the latest blow to Yoon, who was impeached and arrested over his Dec. 3 martial law decree that plunged the country into huge political turmoil, shaking South Korean politics and financial markets as well as its international image. Separate from criminal judicial proceedings, the Constitutional Court is now deliberating whether to formally dismiss Yoon as president or reinstate him."
Can we borrow THEIR SC for a few weeks to indict and remove our Asshole-in-Chief? We can send our six SC rightwing puppets for sabbatical and retraining in Moscow or Beijing.
I have been forgiven by Tigger for not providing a second bagel like yesterday. Mostly because Other Human Servant decided to go to church and I'm his only remaining Human Servant. So after he rolled up with a big goofy grin and a demand for belly rubs I am back in his good graces! Peace once again reigns in this little household of mine!
I took the plunge yesterday and adopted a second cat to provide Zooty a companion in-house we have not had since Reebo disappeared into the neighborhood last August. First night in my small apartment, with one bedroom, a living area including dining area, and kitchen. Newcomer, Seal (I'll upload a photo to my substack later, just be patient!) is a good boy who has a litter distribution problem, but at least he's using the box! I left the carrier out for him to have a base of operations. After I rolled into bed last night, he starts running around looking for rubs and seeking to plant scent on me to denote ownership. A couple of times during the night he woke me up for more rubs and just general cavorting on the bed, but he's not ready to just sleep on the bed with me, yet. Don't think it will take long, we're already forming a bond. Zooty is a bit off put by this interloper, it will take time for them to get along, I'm sure they'll become fast friends once they agree to share the big dumb cat (me).
In case anyone doubted that Elon Musk was a full on neonazi:
Musk, who appeared virtually at the campaign event in Halle, Germany, urged AfDβs candidate for chancellor Alice Weidel and her supporters not to lose their national pride: βItβs good to be proud of German culture, German values, and not to lose that in some sort of multiculturalism that dilutes everything.β
The Tesla CEO said he hoped Weidel would become Germanyβs chancellor after an election on Feb. 23, as Musk suggested the country suffered from βtoo much bureaucracyβ from the European Union.
Musk appeared to reference Germanyβs Nazi past, saying he believed there is βtoo much focus on past guiltβ and βchildren should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents.β
Weidel applauded Musk for his support and echoed President Donald Trumpβs slogan by saying she would βMake Germany great again.β
Did you guys check the animated short that is with this post? What happens in it is what many people here have been asking for. It's a really short short, less than two minutes.
I make the world's best french fries, but not tonight. The really great ones have to be parboiled then double fried and they're even better if you freeze them after the first fry and then do the second one days or weeks later. I don't have the patience for that right now so tonight's are made in the convection oven. I suppose that's the same as an air fryer. They're pretty good but not great.
I have family vacationing in the Keys. They sent pictures of weed dispensaries. Looks real. When I click on the website it 404s me. How does this get past Bootsy McHateseverythingcool?

Still havenβt seen that. Is it on Pluto or another free streaming service, do you know?
Pluto isn't a streaming service. It was reclassified as a dwarf streaming service.
Hardee har har!
Doorβs thataway, my friend.
If you have a library card it's free on Kanopy.
You might want to double check Kanopy; my search came up empty. :( However, I'm hopeful that the DVD I requested will be available in time.
https://www.kanopy.com/en/product/blackkklansman
Sorry, this video is not available for your institution. :( I hope the DVD shows up in time.
I might need to check it out early, then; my library does not seem to have enough slots for Saturday night Kanopy.
The best scene is Belafonte. I LOVE that guy!

I saw it a while ago. It is a fun movie
I know there's a new thread, but it's something to do with Canada ( I haven't read it yet ), so I figured it was best to come back here.

Sexism fucks shit up.
Not going to end well. What is the easiest way to dispose of excess males? A small war. Or a big one. Either that or emmigration ... to here?
To kill 30 million soldiers takes a WWII sized war or invading Ukraine
So does Japan. So does South Korea.
Maybe not as much as China b/c of birth imbalances, but b/c of male misogynistic behavior.
>>resulting from their one child policy (sex-selective abortion)<<
And female infanticide.
They already do I am sure.

OMG I just went to watch. I am DYING here!!!! Thank you SO much!!!
I loved it. Short and sweet.
I thought it was excellent.
And it got me watching CGI shorts. Fun stuff.
I like them, they do have some really good shorts.

Seems like I saw someone say here a few days ago that frying them in duck fat was the absolute shit. It sounded very decadent and tasty.
I can confirm that duck fat makes awesome fries.
The duck fat flows like water in France, but itβs harder to find in the US, and expensive.
Can you even keep your French visa if you bake your pommes frites?
Probably not.
