Good morning Wonkers. Watched a good 'bad' SciFi flick last night. The special effects were just bizarre. It was kind of fun.

I loved - LOVED - my Surface Book which was a tablet with detachable keyboard w/extra battery. Also had pen with size AAAA battery that lasted a good 3 years or so.

Unfortunately, the battery inside that tablet portion started swelling and it did not survive my attempt to replace the battery. That thing was SO VERY glued together.

Went looking at Brigitte Bardot's life and legacy, out of curiosity. Acted in a shitload of movies, sang a shitload of songs, advocated for animal rights, and espoused anti-immgration and right-wing views, even endorsing Marine le Pen, calling her a modern Joan of Arc.

Quite a life.

We've all grown up with bigoted ideas pushed on us by the sick fucking society we live in. Most people - even those who later become reactionary assholes - shed some of that as they grow up, but other bits stick with us, unrecognized. When the day comes in middle age when someone calls out those bits that stuck, some of us learn and be better, others decide to go all-in on bigotry instead.

Expand full comment

Just drives me batty that someone can advocate for animals and yet disdain humanity. Humans are also an animal! Lots of them are mistreated! What the fuck, fellow humans. I do not even LIKE people and I get that, so no one else has got any excuse.

Whichever Attenborough is showing whales in the Antarctic sea. I heart whales so much.

*also, he is a nice person and even wrote an intro for my friend's children's book about animal protection.

*Now he's doing the ridiculous and phenomenal Emperor penguins. And there was a fat seal lyin' there scratching it's side with it's funny paw.

We often went out to a place near our house in Maine after storms to watch the adorable harbor seals surfing with delight. They didn't come out of the sea on our cove to beach, but much of my childhood was at the sea. Or in it.

I've yet to take any of our Newfies there, but it's a goal. *I think i'm actually a Selkie*

I went on a whale watching trip once, like in 1990. It was a few hours long, out of Provincetown MA. We only saw one humpback, but we did see a whale up close. It was way cool.

Some people got motion sick on the trip.

In Maine, we call those "fog watching tours" and cautioned our guests against them 😹 They also sometimes treat boats like bathtub toys around our old place, including one trip with Dad at the helm, which we enjoyed but upset Mom a lot when we told her about it delightedly 😳 They just lightly bump the hull a bit from below, no harm.

I adore Sperm whales and Belugas, which are your favorites?

*also got to see the African penguins south of Cape Town 20 yrs ago this time of year [after that awkward waddle to shore, they hit the water and shoot like ***missiles***!!!], and related that and other stories of our trip, again, to the TeenX last night at dinner. It was the trip during which she was conceived with the miracle of science, at a famed clinic. She is the Christmas Miracle.
