Saw "What We Do in the Shadows" with my youngest and we laughed so hard....

I cannot fathom how this film ever got international success. It is the most Wellington movie ever made. You cannot properly understand it unless you've lived in Wellington. How can you explain to anyone else why it's hilarious that The Cathedral Of Despair is the bowling club outside the Haitaitai bus tunnel, or that you've eaten at the place where Nick attempts to eat fries with disastrous results?

Virgin Monk Boy's avatar

“What We Do in the Shadows” nailed something theology has been dodging for centuries: monsters are easier roommates than evangelicals. Vampires just argue about dishes and arterial spray. Church boards argue about women’s hair length and who’s going to hell.

And honestly, the line about virgin blood? That’s half of purity culture in one joke. Holiness by technicality. Sandwiches taste better when no one has touched them. That’s not doctrine, that’s a freshman dorm myth with fangs.

Blessed be the ones who’d rather hang out with vampires than MAGA trolls. At least the vampires know they’re sucking you dry.

Uh ... there are many, many choices for "fuckin' idjut." We need one more clue ...

In speech last week, Clarence Thomas said that he does not give a shit about stare decisis and legal precedent. And while the other MAGA-SCOTUS justices claimed to respect precedent in their confirmation hearings, clearly they were lying.

"At Catholic University, Thomas said he respects precedent, but “the precedent should be respectful of our legal tradition and our country and our laws and be based on something, not just something that somebody dreamt up and others went along with.”

Yeah, like your "originalism" bullshit?

FurryCaterwauling's avatar

My thought exactly regarding stare decisis and the current rogue's gallery of SCOTUS.

Also too, it's a great example of cognitive dissonance.

Woke up bleary.

Grabbed phone, read news.

Wish I'd had coffee & taken a shit first.

Now I feel twice as bad, but I'm stuck in another MAGA day.

Sad thoughts.

Chuck Schumer is going to cut some half-assed "deal" and sell us out tomorrow. For the second time in a row.

I want to get rid of Schumer, but we have to stop supporting this fantasy land scenario of AOC primary-ing him off the ballot. AOC can't win a state-wide election in NY. Only a portion of NYC residents like her & all of the upstate and LI voters will unite against her. We'll be stuck with a Republican senator from NY if she pulls that move. Don't!

Don't delude yourselves, NY is capable of voting Republican. George Pataki was governor for 12 years and much more popular than either Cuomo. NYC had a republican in city hall for 20 years - 2 terms of Giuliani (ugh) and 3 of Bloomberg. The last of which was illegal until he paid out to revise the City Charter. In all that time, the local democrats couldn't win or even run a viable candidate. They suck.

The problem is Wall Street. They want a New Yorker in charge of the senate banking committee. That's Schumer's real job - keeping Wall Street happy.

Ideally, he'd just step down from party leadership & retain his the chair of the banking committee. He won't though - he's an arrogant prick with delusions of greatness & irreplaceability.

If he gets tossed in a primary, watch how fast Wall Street & the Murdoch media machine (the NY Post, Wall Street Journal & all of Fox) unite behind some smooth talking former Goldman I-banker who wants to dabble in politics. He'll (for sure "he") be portrayed as the "reasonable" "fiscally responsible" candidate that the City needs to avoid the financial ruin that would be caused by a raving, left-wing lunatic socialist like AOC. The electoral script is already written. It's like trying to predict pro wrestling. Not hard.

But Jesus, don't let it happen.

I fear that we're all going to be screwed again. Starting tomorrow. Sorry.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

If the only option left is Schumer we are cooked.

Progressive policies are popular. Stop allowing them to be framed and monkey wrenched by neolibs and people will vote for them.

Reader's avatar

False. Bernie won the entire state except a few cities. Won it handily, too. But NYC decides the state. The notion that upstate is full of yokels is false. Of course, AOC is far to the right of Bernie, so might not do so well.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

Did you check this out today? I swear I made my comment before seeing it.

IF DEMOCRATS TAKE STRONG ECONOMIC STANDS, THEY CAN STOP BEING DEFINED BY THEIR ENEMIES

https://nomoremister.blogspot.com/2025/09/if-democrats-take-strong-economic.html

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

Or they just won't vote.

"Progressive policies are popular."

New York state is not New York City.

(BTW: you don't really believe that weakling Schumer is the same as Trump, do you?)

So-called "progressives" have a victim mentality.

Yes. go ahead and blame the "neolibs" (whoever they are), and make sure that the GOP wins.

How about exciting people that don't bother to vote, (like the youngs)?

You're good at that.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

"weakling Schumer is the same as Trump"

Just wanted to circle back on that. I think people like Schumer are responsible for rise of Trump. I think Trump is a reflection of the ineffectiveness of Liberal, neo-Liberal, and "centrist" government. Problems have festered and now a significant part of our population has lost faith that either party can fix them. Trump is their fuck you for that.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

The democratic party is a hollowed out shell with absolutely nothing to offer anyone unless a corporation gets a cut. It's old and it's obsolete. Adapt or die. And it sounds like you'd rather die.

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

I wish the world was really as black and white as you think it is.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

Look where these namby-pamby centrists have brought us. Just look. You blame this on Progressives, who've been cock-blocked from power for 40 years? You STILL think you'll get credit for "infrastructure projects" while the right sends the military to blue cities? You STILL cling to the centrist fantasy that sucking up to Lynn Cheney and telling Gaza activists to STFU is the path to victory? Still?

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

Thank you for your realistic take on NY politics.

NY state is FAR more conservative than people think.

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

Agree with all of this. To me, a downstate Democrat like Senator Gillibrand had to compromise all of the progressive agenda to get voted in. I could say the same for Hillary.

Right now, I don't see a for-real progressive Democrat that could unseat Fuck Chuck.

BRENNAN: Are you comfortable with pushing the limits of some of these uses of troops or federal agents?

RAND PAUL: The people in Portland and across America have to decide about this. We had anarchy in Portland for like six months or a year. I think there is a role for the federal government.

EyeQueue's avatar

Fuck off you piece of shit. There was no "anarchy" you rat bastard.

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

"Rat bastards" indeed!

Got to sleep around one, which seems to have become my habit lately. Awakened before four, eventually got up and put some wood on the fire and fed the cats, gave Alice her eyedrops. Just starting to drift off to sleep, and now I’m starting to wonder if I shut the damper on the wood stove. 97% sure, dammit is not good enough. Bother.

ETA: got up, checked on it, everything was shut down and now I am perky perky and also tired. Happy Sunday, everybody.

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

I am the only one in my family of four that can sleep like a log.

I truly appreciate this, as I have seen how difficult it can be.

I hope you can take a nap.

Republicans Distract From Epstein Controversy By Each Sharing Most Embarrassing Moment Of Life

WASHINGTON—"It began when one congressman took the floor and admitted to clogging his crush’s toilet in eighth grade,” said congressional correspondent Amy Bertrand, who added that other Republican representatives quickly joined in, waving their arms to get the attention of the press gallery while confessing everything from indulging in a chocolate cupcake on Friday nights to having once killed a family in a drunk driving accident.

“The revelations really started picking up after Rep. John Rose (R-TN) took the podium and said, ‘I groomed my wife from the age of 12, and yet she still doesn’t love me. Please, someone write a thinkpiece so I can get some answers.’”

At press time, House Speaker Mike Johnson had reportedly stood up and shouted, “I’m the BTK Killer!”

In September 2025, posts surfaced on social media claiming that singer and talk-show host Kelly Clarkson announced she was cutting ties with all brands that support LGBTQ+ causes without any evidence to corroborate the claim.

This is supposedly her response to Kirk's murder.

We should have handed them their fucking ASSES at the end of the Civil War and we wouldn't be where we are right now.

I'm a big believer in electability (from all my years working in politics).

Mr. Demme sent me a excerpt of Gavin Newsom on Colbert's show, saying "divorce is not an option" when dealing with the right.

2 questions:

1. Divorce is not an option?

2. How are we supposed to deal with murderous and stupid RWNJs?

Do we have to separate ourselves?

One that votes, and one that feels?

EyeQueue's avatar

I think divorce should be on the table. As you say, how do we deal with these murderous thugs? And make no mistake: Many of them want to murder us.

The 2 sides are NOT the same. :(

Gulf temps up a tic, but not much. Humberto has gone cat 5, heading towards Bermuda, but may loop around just west of it. Still a very not good situation there. Storm 9 from the abyss still puttering around the Carribean, when it heads north it likely will be given a shove east by our favorite high just short of the coast. Narda still puttering around the Pacific. BUT there is a low over the middle of the Gulf. Keep an eye on this. If it develops it would not be good.
