I realize this is totally farfetched, but it's fiction. Settle down, everybody! As the wife of a retired submariner, I'm glad and weirdly proud that the Silent Service put an end to the dastardly Janelle Stark!
OK, this one is a bit much... how/why in the world would a top-notch military crew on a top-notch naval vessel of the entirely-superior-in-every-way US of A get outmaneuvered and boarded by the likes of these clowns? Sure, plot device and drama and hand-to-hand combat, but come on... and, they're going to show this in their documentary and destroy all credibility of the US military?
Woof. In the Real World (tm), nobody would have gotten within 500 meters of that Navy ship. I know fiction is all about suspension of disbelief but you gotta work with me here.
I understand not wanting to trigger an international incident, but srsly -- you give them a warning, you put a few rounds in the water near them, and if they still don't get the message you open fire because you can assume they're hostile.
In these days of seaborne attack drones (cf Ukraine) no self respecting navy would allow hostile craft anywhere close. There's a reason that "a shot across the bow" is a term.
Also nobody would allow an unopposed boarding on their ship. All those squids are trained in small arms even if not like marines and the first grappling hook would be followed by a hail of gunfire from the crew.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this story, really I have, but this part would surely have benefited from some review/editing.
My guess is that Stark slipped a tracker into Lorinda's pistol, and that's one of the reasons she asked for it. (The other being that you don't generally want to let your prisoners be armed.) Because otherwise, there's a whole lotta CCSA moles in the Underground and the border.
Oooh the USA set it all up for the documentary right?!?
Ta, Steve and Ellis. Who would have guessed that Lorinda would turn out to be a badass. Good on the submariners.

Welp... I guess next week'll be time to re-read the whole story in one go, and be reminded of the little details I've forgotten along the way.
I really enjoy your writing Steve and Ellis, and will reStack ASAP 💯👍🇺🇸💙🌊🌊
