I have a similar fear, but it encourages me that 400 people got off the plane. Of course, they were Japanese and considerate of each other. An American would have said, "Women and children first, right after me". People in Japan are uniformly polite. I believe that when you live in close quarters (subways, stores, restaurants, etc.) the route to survival is good manners.
I am absolutely terrified of fire and can only hope that the end came quickly for the crew aboard that Japanese Coast Guard craft. With ALL of my black little heart I hope that the smoke overwhelmed them before the flames engulfed that plane.
