I made the mistake of keeping our last dog longer than was kind. We could tell she had doggie dementia, that she was having problems with her hips (although glucosamine chondroitin seemed to help, like taking an Advil for chronic arthritis), and she just didn't seem to be enjoying life any more, even though her appetite was near normal. I think she would have been better off if we took her to the vet for the last time some 6 or 8 weeks before we did, but we kept hoping that she'd get better somehow. We now know that was foolish and selfish, but at the time we thought that if we got the right combination of love and medication we could have kept her for longer.
