Market pundits mostly shrugged off Fitch's recent downgrade of U.S. debt. Fitch, one of the three primary rating services, downgraded U.S. credit ratings to AA+ from its highest rating of AAA, citing two decades of poor financial decision-making and political dysfunction as significant factors contributing to the downgrade. Only Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Luxembourg, Singapore and Australia are awarded Fitch's AAA rating. Interestingly, "beer-drinking" European countries tend to have higher ratings overseas, while "wine-drinking" countries like France, Spain and Italy lag.

Once again, why NOW? Why not two decades ago? Or a decade ago? Or five years ago?

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

edit: and why only "two decades"? Bush the lesser goes back further than that and did somemondo disasterous financial decision making

So that the weight of blame for 2008 can fall on Obama.

And as Yogi said, "The third half was nothing to write home about either."

And the morons in the house who dropped the last bundle of straw will shout that it's all the Democrats' fault, all the while indulging in the political dysfunction that contributed to the downgrade.

I'm a midnight girl in a sunset town

I've seen places on the TV where they stay up all night long

Around here it's early to bed and they rise before the dawn

They say the old ways are still the best, I cannot deny it

But I can't get no rest cause it's just too quiet

I'm wondering if the police chief cooked the whole thing up, and used the restaurant owner's troubles as an excuse to raid the newspaper and the home of the owner. What he really wanted was to keep the newspaper from investigating why he left the Kansas CIty police department.

eppe's avatar

True. I suspect that the police chief didn't cotton to the local newspaper looking too closely at his admittedly shady past doings.

Stulexington's avatar

From what I've seen it's even worse, they actually admitted in public that the reason for the raid was they were sure the paper was about to print an inflammatory story. So they did it over thought crimes.

Land Shark ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ's avatar

Definitely. There's more to this story than what's written. Who is the judge? What are they caught up in, also too?

Yeah, no. Casey could be a little more left for my taste, but he isn't bad and he's got my vote. Some of the right wing nutters I know here don't like him, but they can't say why, so I suppose Fox has defamed him occasionally.

His first task upon taking office will be to improve the quality of cruditรฉs in Pennsylvania to something approaching that of the cruditรฉs in Connecticut. Some say it is impossible but Davy boy is up to the challenge.

It's 62 degrees! this morning and in a few hours will be taking the kayak to a nearby creek to mark elderberry plants for harvesting cuttings early next spring. One of the plants had huge umbels of fruit that were too big to easily put into a 5 gallon bucket without cramming them in.

asmallmacropod ๐Ÿจ's avatar

That's about what it is here in the upside down. We don't have elderberries here. Will you make cordial?

Martini Glambassador's avatar

What do you do with them? We have tons and tons that grow wild here and Iโ€™m always tempted to pick the berries but Iโ€™m not sure what Iโ€™d use them for.

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

Add one teaspoon of arsenic, half a teaspoon of strychnine, and just a pinch of cyanide.

Martini Glambassador's avatar

My understanding is that the raw berries do indeed contain toxic substances, so youโ€™ve gotta cook em. Unless you are a wicked stepmother.

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

I'd like to help you out, but everything I know about elderberries, and the wine derived therefrom, comes from Arsenic & Old Lace.

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

I make jelly and some people make wine, bad thing about the wine is it has to age for years before it's drinkable. Made jelly a few days ago and of course it didn't jell so I need to readjust the recipe to fix it, what a PITA.

One swing in the chute... they were fucking lucky.

Bobathonic, Dingus Crusher's avatar

I have heard no follow up, I hope they're ok.

I knew one Naval aviator who had ejected. He was B/N on an A-6, which had trouble on taking off from an air base. It started rolling as soon as they got airborne. His back injury ruined him for flight.

Thatsit Fortheotherwon's avatar

I knew a Marine who punched out when his jet over-rotated (think it was an A-4) and got no chute and lived to tell the tale. Apparently the ejection seat had about the same speed as the jet (~140 knots) but to the rear, and he plopped on the runway. He was beat up pretty bad but managed to get back on flying status. Dude's last name was Luck.

Scary times today. I took my kid fishing and my parents joined us. After about an hour, Mom said she felt light-headed, and walked from the dock to the parking lot. Dad and I started packing up to leave. When I got to the parking lot, Mom was semi-conscious, half-in/half-out of their vehicle. We got her into the vehicle, got some cool towels and whatnot on her neck, under her arms, etc., and within 15 minutes or so (by the time she was home) she was ambulatory.

Heat ain't to be trifled with.

Linda1961 is woke and proud's avatar
