Don't forget the process that produced his victory was NY's first attempt at ranked choice voting in a field of like 20 candidates. He barely squeaked through that.

Said it before, but it bears repeating: We need to stop electing "democrats" who spout right wing talking points.

They are not centrist. They are right wing.

I will never understand the lack of universal support for Kamala Harris. She’s a wonderful person and intelligent, rational leader. She has decades of service in her future, if she wants it. She should be our first female president. Dems need to embrace her harder and treat her better. Wingnuts despise any thoughtful, capable person who they feel is “above” them. That’s partly why Trump titillates them, he’s an amoral, dishonest slob who doesn’t hide his flaws, he broadcasts them in high-def 24/7. That’s why he’s “different,” and an “outsider.” Because he’s an unapologetic piece of shit. People can aspire for more. And embracing a capable woman of color won’t immediately make all the real men patriots instantly impotent.

Fair point, absolutely. But her admission that it was a mistake is, at least, the correct response from her. Yes, most politicians lie, but I still believe some politicians feel deeply about their integrity, and are willing to speak the truth when it’s politically inconvenient. I respect Joe Biden and feel he’s as close to an honest person of integrity as we’ve had in ages (other than Obama, who was usually trustworthy) since probably Jimmy Carter. I think Harris understands the moment better now, and knows her base better. I need to read her argument to understand what her logic was in arguing against care for that inmate. I’m glad she reversed herself and I hope it’s sincere.

To be completely fair, the president doesn't get to make laws. They just sign or reject what Congress sends them. Or they stand by while a fascist Supreme Court overrules laws passed by Congress.

What I'm saying is, we can safely vote for Harris someday without worrying about her cancelling trans rights.

I'm sure someone else who watched the "popular knapsack" video has said this already, but I kept shaking my head at his repetition of "there are no First Amendment rights in your household" while talking about searches, which if memory serves me is a **Fourth** Amendment thing ("unreasonable search and seizure"). If this guy can't even keep straight on which amendment he's ready to violate, why would I want to trust him in a position where he can violate a *whole lot* of them?

I don't know how this could be posted today without anything about what Mayor McSwagger just did. He was in DC for meetings about getting federal money for immigration expenses and turned around and flew back to NYC instead because his 24 year old chief fundraiser woman got busted by the feds. And it turned out the cops knew it was going to happen and had a car at her house hours before for some reason. What did he have to do in person? Meet his cronies and get their story straight? Destroy hard drives and shred documents?

Everyone already knew he was corrupt but this might be a stake in the heart.

The ancient Athenians actaully believed the most democratic method of selecting leaders was via random lottery. Which I considered the merits of for 3 minutes, when I saw the headline "Idiot Tourist Gets Mauled Trying to Pet Bison At Yellowstone as Bystanders Tell Him He is an Idiot"

Isn't that what happens in a GOP primary?

Trump as bison works, too.

Jules's avatar

Almost. Instead of a popularity contest trying to appeal to the fringes, every voter's name was put into the lottery (since it was a direct democracy). And they only did it rarely, for really important things. The general perception in Athens was the best leaders are the ones who don't want to; if you believe you're capable of the job, you're likely too egotistical to have it. Of course, the only people considered citizens/allowed to vote would largely be the same people Republicans think should only be allowed to have rights today - no women, no working class, no foreigners, must own property or be set to inherit. And there were many who found Spartan authoritarianism more appealing than their democracy.

I concur with your dismissal of Adams as a serious contender in 2028. I also agree that Kamala Harris is massively underestimated. But I still think that Whitmer is the frontrunner for the presidential nomination. For one thing, Harris is from California, and Gavin Newsom will do everything he can to undermine her. Second, one of the reasons Harris is unpopular, and also one of the reasons she's Vice President, is her strong law-and-order bias. She has ticked off many other progressive boxes, but Whitmer has actually passed progressive legislation in a state whose Democratic Party captured a legislative majority for the first time in twenty-some years. Meanwhile, opposition researchers will have a ball recounting Harris's support of the death penalty. Whitmer's second and final term as governor will end in 2027, and she'll have almost two years to establish her campaign. Maybe she'll even get a useful Cabinet post from Biden. (Full disclosure: I am a Michigan progressive, but I was realistic enough to predict a Trump victory in 2016...)

What the hell was that video? Was he teaching people how to search their own homes for evidence? Or was it "Don't hide things here because the cops know to look here" ? What was all that first amendment stuff - was that kids don't have the right to privacy, or was it something about when the police are searching your home?

That's what I said! First Amendment is freedom of speech and religion, ***Fourth*** Amendment is protection against unreasonable search and seizure. I guess when you're happy to violate someone's rights because Reasons, it doesn't really matter about which one you're actually violating.

(Although I do agree that kids get up to Bad Stuff at times, and especially if your kid has a history of Bad Stuff, you shouldn't be shy about figuring out where the hiding places are and checking them occasionally.)

Isn't the goofball factor in politics a thing? I mean, how many dumb things can Eric Adams say and do before people stop taking him seriously?

He'd probably be better off switching to the Republicans. Their goofball tolerance is, apparently, infinite.
