And yet Wyoming is further to the left (physically and politically) than the Nebraska Panhandle.

If a woman wanted to seek an abortion clinic and stay within Nebraska from here, she would have to travel four hundred miles (Lincoln). Wyoming has two clinics much closer.

If you gave me 50 guesses on which state was known as "The Equality State" based on the reasons provided, I probably would have needed at least 45 guesses.

"Wyoming Republicans have been hoisted on their own petard — which, incidentally, I recently discovered was a small bomb used to blow open doors and gates and not some kind of pulley system as I had always imagined. " --Robyn

Robyn, I love you. Carry on!

It kinda fuckin sucks out here. Fun enough place to be a young punk rocker and kick back against the pricks, but now everyone from the old days are all ā€œconservative is the new punkā€ sniveling dipshits and it’s hella boring.

Angry Old Pedant here, but it is hoist WITH one's own petard, or less acceptably hoist BY, but never hoist ON. Sorry, but ever since the election, I've become "that person."

My take on the ban is that it is a violation of the First Amendment freedom of religion, as I believe one of the persons named also is claiming, not every religion puts an embryo over a living breathing human and that should have standing.... just as the "well regulated" part of the 2nd Amendment should.

then as now, there weren’t enough people in Wyoming to get a goddamned thing done if women were excluded from every facet of public and political life, as was traditional in more heavily populated areas

ā€œhoistā€ meaning ā€œbe propelled upwardsā€

it means you were standing too close or badly laid your charges and blowed yourself up

that doesn't seem to be a common defintion of hoist, as either a noun or a verb. as far as petard goes, until today, i'd thought it was some kind of garter or suspenders that were in use before elastic was a thing.

the phrase first appears in Hamlet, so between poetic figurative speech and being several iterations of English old, some shift in the common definition of words is to be expected; in fact, the word ā€œhoistā€ here is the past tense of ā€œhoise,ā€ a verb we no longer recognize at all, but which means ā€œto be raisedā€

ā€œraised [by the explosive force of] his own bombā€ would be the literal modern equivalent

Hoist BY their own petard, if you don't mind. Also NB "petard" is a play on the French word for "fart".

You can't tarnish that legacy more vigorously than by electing Harriet Hageman. She fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down. She's an embarrassment to Wyoming.
