Well, more I read her CV the less I like her. I'm sure she'll do swimmingly well for Uber & AirBnb in her new post. Maybe she can get in on some of Sinemas private equity action as well. Don't doubt she's cali enough to occupy the seat, or corporate enough to be beasties w/ the Gippers like Fienstien. Actually standing up for the little person Ala Warren? Not so much. Truly hope she follows Warrens mid-life flip to the Eat The Rich caucus.
Tuberville is loathed by a large chunk of the state of Alabama itself, due to being the coach at Auburn, for that matter. He wouldn't have gotten elected 10 years ago before Bama went on its Nick Saban GOAT years and made the Bama a little bit more generous to Auburn (who last won a title in 2010, compared to the 6-7 Bama racked up since then.)
Maybe she had some role in Proposition 22? From some points of view it was very antilabor, since it classified what might have been employees as contractors. The workers cannot unionize if they aren't even employees, right?
While I'm confident that Ms. Butler will vote as California progressive Democrats would wish, the entire manner in which she was chosen was exceedingly distasteful. First Newsom announces that he will only pick a Black woman for the post. Why? Something to do with Senator Harris choosing a promotion perhaps? Or because he is pandering to the many Black Women in the party leadership, where they punch far above their weight in terms of demographic numbers? Had he declared that he would only pick a White Man the party faithful would have exploded with indignation, but somehow flipping both of those categories makes it "OK" or "just". Then he compounds the stench by picking a woman who only spent a quarter of her life in the state and was not currently a citizen. Black Women make up around 3% of the population, but surely no one can seriously argue that none of these roughly 1.2 million Black Women California citizens were qualified for the post!
"First Newsom announces that he will only pick a Black woman for the post. Why?" Because he was slammed for the choice of Padilla by people who didn't think a Black woman should be replaced by a Latin man.
"Then he compounds the stench by picking a woman who only spent a quarter of her life in the state" If you read the article, she has spent practically her entire life in the state.
Wikipedia has her in the state only from 2009 to 2021. 12 years. She is 44. Definitely not "almost her whole life". Since 2021 she has been living in Maryland, where she was registered to vote.
As far as I can tell Newsom dug himself into a hole with "must be a Black Woman" and then followed up with "must be a temporary appointment to avoid putting his finger on the electoral scale". Lo and behold, the Black Women office holders who he might logically have named very much wanted that finger on the scale, it seems they all wanted to leverage this chance appointment into a long Senate career. This is why sending the spouse or child of a deceased Senator to fill the seat until an election can be run is less politically fraught for a Governor.
I'm guessing Newsom is a terrible chess player, since he didn't think even two moves ahead in this case.
I predict that she will not run for the Senate. She will “live” in California for the nonce and then she will go where she is needed next. Can we not join in the speculation and just know that Gavin was trying to not put his thumb on the scale AND he did what he promised.
After Butler had already been announced as Feinstein's replacement I saw a headline claiming that Meghan Markle might be picked. I don't know if they were serious, or if it was one of those "The Queen Makes William King Instead of Charles!" type of headlines by idiots.
The latter. It's in the same category as "Michelle Obama will swoop in at the convention and take the nomination" or "Donald Trump will be the next Speaker of the House."
Oh, experience and qualifications are so 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨. What America wants to know is, what is her recipe for cookies, and is she good at talking shit on Twitter?
If you're moving from California, at least. Our state motto is "We're going to tax the fuck out of you, but not quite enough so that you can get all the cool benefits of a decent high-tax country like The Europes."
there's a difference between a blind and naked appeal to authority ("they will be a great politician because they are a great CEO, cop, soldier, etc."), which more often than not implies that their record must under no circumstances be questioned, and actually presenting someone's resume for the public to look into.
as for the carpetbagging bit, Reagan was from Illinois. I don't think Republicans have a pot to piss in (as usual)
"I mean, let them wallow in their pigsty of incompetence and inability to govern. They are destroying our institution."
Representative Pramila Jayapal should start speaking her mind, holding back is going to give her an ulcer.
Who ever makes decisions for autocorrect needs to stop boozing the day away. Changing a sitting representative's name... what kind of code decides that a non commenter meant 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘦 𝘢 𝘫𝘢𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘭?
Has anyone in the history of spoken English ever spoken that phrase?
OT: Just checked WaPo to see what’s happening with McCarthy, and saw this banner headline: “BREAKING: Earth shattered September heat record, with temperatures around the world at levels closer to normal for July.”
It's mid-80s in San Francisco this week. We consider mid-to-low 70s to be unusually warm Nice Weather, even in the summer. The more inland parts of the state are gonna be roasting.
Its 80 something here, and my store's heat was on. Its controlled from the head office, because you would not want the locals to adjust the HVAC for logical conditions now would you? Heat went on on Oct 1, and by experience will stay on until someone in the home office turns it off. Could be February. Could be August. Have had both happen. Let me tell you about building patio furniture in February with a snowstorm outside and the air conditioning on......
When I got my mani/pedi yesterday with M, I was complaining that I wanted just ONE cool day. She said she’d heard there was a “cold front” moving in. I replied, “yeah, by ‘cold front,’ you mean highs in the 80s instead of the 90s?”
She checked the forecast and confirmed I was correct.
I think we need a meme like the head of lettuce for Qevin's speakership, although given the imminent vote, maybe an ice sculpture would be more appropriate.
I read somewhere that there is a legal requirement to generate a list of replacments for speaker - a law designed to cope with a massive event, like a nuclear attack-and that that goes into effect automatically if the speaker chair is vacant and that only mccarthy knows what's on the list. Might be fun
Butler is overqualified for the Senate.

I present the following two cases:
Josh Hawley lives in Virginia, but uses his sister’s house as his Missouri ‘residence.’
Tommy ‘Coach’ Tuberville has lived in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida for some 20 years. He allegedly represents Georgia in the Senate.
Can we talk about these two yahoos?

He allegedly represents *Alabama
You're right. My bad. He's still terrible, no matter which state he allegedly 'represents.'
Can someone explain "advised Uber against labor rights"?
Maybe she had some role in Proposition 22? From some points of view it was very antilabor, since it classified what might have been employees as contractors. The workers cannot unionize if they aren't even employees, right?

Someone on MSNBC last night said Newsom would only appoint someone who does NOT plan to run in 2024, meaning Butler has no ambition to be elected.
Sounds like that's...not true? In which case, could there be other things I hear on TV that are false? Not sure I'm ready for that.
What makes that "sound not true"? She hasn't said anything that indicates any interest in running for the permanent position.
people can actually move TO Maryland to lower their tax burden?
I thought I'd heard of everything
If you're moving from California, at least. Our state motto is "We're going to tax the fuck out of you, but not quite enough so that you can get all the cool benefits of a decent high-tax country like The Europes."
Better than Georgia's "We're going to tax you, but then not spend it, and then give you a refund, and then you still have potholes in the road."
My county's motto is "We're going to tax you AND we're going to spend the money where it needs to go." We've got a pothole hotline, it's great!
That's a very long state motto 🤪
Our motto is "So query peninsular amenities, circumspectly."
That actually sounds better than the real mitten motto.
To be fair, I've condensed it. Also, we have 27 other official state mottoes.
Ms. Butler has until 12/8 to declare. Not a lot of time.
11/13/23-12/8/23
DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY AND NOMINATION PAPERS —
ALL VOTER-NOMINATED, NON-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
Period in which all candidates for United States Senator, United States
Representative in Congress, State Senator, and Member of the State Assembly
must file a declaration of candidacy for office and ballot designation

Gaetz motion will be Tabled 218- something... he only lost 3 members unless someone changes...

But still thinking fondly of Pat Cipollone being called “Patsy Baloney”
With the addition of a comma, it could be a stoner in search of a joint. Or so I hear.
Silly me. What stoner (besides me) gives a shit about punctuation?!
Many stoners are serious about dotting the Ts...
Crossing the Is, however, is a bridge too far... (where the hell is a serif font when you need it?)
I never found the I, is it a river? Someone said bridge..I did cross the T. I stopped to pray a jay to a pal. Shared it. Yup.
A religious stoner who wanted a joint?
OT: Just checked WaPo to see what’s happening with McCarthy, and saw this banner headline: “BREAKING: Earth shattered September heat record, with temperatures around the world at levels closer to normal for July.”
So… Go, Earth?
Me thinks this September was the coolest I will experience for the rest of my life.
Sadly, me too.
Yep. We hope you have enjoyed the Fuck-Around portion of climate change. Please stay tuned for the even more exciting Find Out portion.
My backyard thermometer is reading 86 Fahrenheits in the shade, this third day of October...
Challenge apparently accepted.

85 here in NE Illinois right now. It touched 90 yesterday. October is the new September.
When I got my mani/pedi yesterday with M, I was complaining that I wanted just ONE cool day. She said she’d heard there was a “cold front” moving in. I replied, “yeah, by ‘cold front,’ you mean highs in the 80s instead of the 90s?”

October: "Hold my beer."
Yuuup. It’s 85 degrees in Chicago today.
ROCKTOBER! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Going, going...
I think we need a meme like the head of lettuce for Qevin's speakership, although given the imminent vote, maybe an ice sculpture would be more appropriate.
A butter sculpture. Something wildly inappropriate.
The McCarthy proceedings, or Earth turning into a massive fireball?
Literally 😂😂😂😂😂
Love you for making me laugh so hard!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the COMFY CHAIR Bwahahaha!

Somehow, this is going to end with MTG starting a nuclear war.
Get worried if she Xeets out "It's on! Wing attack Plan R!"
