Extremely short answer.

Bosnia was 800 years of hatred. Tito held Yugoslavia together with an iron fist. He wouldn't allow the traditional ethnic and religious fighting because he was a dictator and if anyone was going to use violence it would be him.

When he died the country broke up and the various groups wanted their old territories back. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, and Macedonia picked up the old grudges and went back to war with each other. It was brutal even by the standards of war.

Milosevic is who you're thinking of.

I know that's so, but I also know he initiated trouble, and I used to see people roaming the streets and gesturing at bombed houses and they'd say 'she was my neighbor for 15 years!' I mean, lots of people were living together ok, inspite of ancient trouble. Isn't that so?
