I appreciate you putting some thought into this. And I would LIKE to become a Unix geek (or at least user) but haven't made the jump, primarily because of my bookkeeping scene, in which I use Quickbooks. But I have revamped a few older machines as Ubuntu towers, and like the platform. I've already dumped Photoshop and Illustrator for GIMP and Inkscape, in hopes of a Windows-free future at some point. I don't hate Windows all that much, but I'd rather not be glued to that particular company.

In any case, your ideas help a lot, and thank you so much for the input.

Well, to be truthful, I detest Linux almost as much as I do Windows, but since I write software for it I have to use it, at least for testing. I would never recommend Linux to anyone as a desktop operating system.

I actually write the software, and do my bookkeeping, and graphics, and wonking, on Macs, because I'm quite happy to pay for the convenience of an excellent GUI combined with a real Unix command line.

Ubuntu can certainly handle the shared-folder aspect of what I propose, but I can't comment on HP scanner support - HP is very Windows-centric - even their Mac support leaves something to be desired.

The Windows => Mac transition is a costly one, no question about it, but if you can afford it I recommend it highly.
