Bexar County -- Texas, of course -- Sheriff's Deputy Jose Nunez, 46, is facing a minimum of 25 years to life in prison if convicted of sexually abusing the child of an undocumented immigrant. Not only did he abuse the child, who he was reportedly related to, he also decided it would be a great idea to terrorize the mother by threatening to deport her if she told. Apparently too afraid to go to the police department, the mother went to the local fire station seeking help for her abused child.
From NBC News :
"A Texas sheriff's deputy was being held Monday on a charge of "super aggravated sexual assault" of a 4-year-old girl after authorities say her mother, an undocumented immigrant, was being blackmailed to stay silent about the abuse — or face deportation."
Well, will you look at that. How many times have we complained that forcing undocumented immigrants to live in the shadows opens them up to untold abuses? And for all of the "Good Cops" out there, we also have a number of "Bad Cops" who will use the power of the badge to hurt those who need our help the most. How it is that people like this are somehow able to get a badge in the first place? Maybe those personality tests need to be tinkered with a bit, possibly even weeding out sociopaths and rapists, please. Thanks.
"This suspect utilized to his advantage to place the mother in fear that she would be deported if she did report it," the sheriff said, adding that the "little girl now is safe."
And this is the fucking problem with running status checks, ramping up deportations, separating families, using ICE as a threat against employees speaking Spanish at a restaurant, and having a xenophobe as president. It causes CRIME VICTIMS to fear being punished for REPORTING CRIMES. How is it that in our "Nation of Laws" we have cases where Law Enforcement will use the laws to get away with breaking the laws? Because America.
Javier Salazar, who represents the Bexar County Sheriff's Department, calls it heartbreaking, disturbing, disgusting, and infuriating all at the same time in his press conference.
Salazar also reports that this crime goes back several months, possibly even years, and there may be other victims out there. He also put out feelers specifically targeted to parents of children related to Nunez, and any other parents of children who have had contact with him. Nunez has been booked on charges of Super Aggravated Sexual Assault on a child under 6 years of age, and is on paid administrative leave for 10 days, and will be on unpaid leave once that runs out. Salazar stated that it was his intention to try to "separate this person from the agency as soon as possible." Apparently cops don't want rapist cops keeping their jobs these days, so there's your good news for the day.
Cases like this are reminders that family separations are not the only attacks facing mothers and children who are undocumented in America. All it takes is one predator, one abuser, one person who is willing to use the threat of ICE to manipulate and abuse, and it opens the vulnerable up to untold suffering and heartache. Using the immigration system as a weapon does not keep America safe, it simply offers horrible people an entire population of humans to abuse. There are too many times when we have dehumanized groups: the Trail of Tears , slavery and the auction blocks , Indian Schools , the Chinese Exclusion Act and Fugitive Slave Act , Japanese Internment, segregation , lynchings , and alllll the times we've been and continue to be shitty to Mexican people. This is not the first time our nation has made excuses for how we treat "those people," but it damn well should be the last.
